Cool Work R/C car challenge...Help needed!

Hi all,

After having seen all the recent radio controlled car threads I thought I'd post in here for advice.

A few of us lads in work have decided to have a bit of a top gear style car challenge, but using radio controlled jobbies instead.

Max purchase price is £40 including postage which makes it tough enough, but we also don't know the challenges being set by another colleague..!!

Final challenge will be the sale, probably via ebay of the purchased vehicle.

So, what sort of thing should I go for..? Any suggestions..?

I used to mess around with 1/10th Tamiya stuff when I was younger, so have been looking out for that, but they seem to be popular now, so are £££

Help me out s'netters..!!!

Nige.

Take a look on ebay, but have a look for the older Tamiya stuff like Grasshoppers used ones of them seem to be going for ****, usually including the controller and servoes

you will get jack for £40 mate...

second hand tamiya stuff is starting to go for as much, if not, more than new these days!!!

best bet would be to get a shop to give you a reciept for £40, after you spent £150.00

although i wouldn't condone this sort of behavior myself!!!

sounds like fun though

I've got a Tamiya TA03F Pro FRP Chassis on eBay at the moment, which would be a good start if you're doing on-road

Sold a mint Tamiya Manta Ray the other day for £56 and a TA02 Scooby with all comms gear for under £40, so keep looking and you'll find something

Are you looking at purely Ebay buys?

Postage is going to be alot on a full set up.

Tamiya have re-released some of the classics (Frog, Grasshopper, Hornet, Hotshot)

I bought a complete Yokomo dogfighter Works 93 with all gear except batteries and charger for £65. Was a bit of a shed but I was restoring a '93 and needed spares. My first proper racer was a 93 hence the project.

If you don't know what your challenges are I would say get an off-roader so at least you can drop or raise the height depending on challenge.

This would be ideal

TEAM ASSOCIATED RC10 B3 on eBay Cars Battery Operated, Cars, Radio-Controlled, Toys Games (item 300136199961 end time 03-Aug-07 14:59:05 BST)

Still need motor, cells and charger but RC10s are plentyfull for spare and quite robust. You don't want an old car that breaks and your stuffed for bits.

If its all onroad do a search on ebay for touring cars.

Fantastic little beasts I know the feeling, all these toys that I could never afford as a kid, I now have to have

Still on the lookout for a Top Force Evolution, but have a Gravel Hound with lots of alloy bits at the moment. I'm having a bit of a clearout of some of my old restoration projects and unused parts.

As other have said if you can find a RC10 for your budget it will take any challenge thrown at it.

Make sure you get a decent battery.

Cheers

Cheers all, looking into the RC10 stuff. Looks a good bet.

Any other ideas..? I know for £40 all in, it's going to be tricky....

You could always go for something more of a "toy".

If the others you are against aren't used to RC cars and cheat with uber fast motors they will break them - its a fact! At least every other meeting I would always break something. One car (Yokomo SD) broke wishbones like sweets with just a gentle glance of the barriers.

Even hardcore 1/8 scale rallycross (my personal favorite of all RC classes by a country mile!!) break regularly.

If you want something cheap but fast then you need to get a Tamiya Falcon, crap cars for anything else but they are only 2wd and the motor/diff set-up is so basic you lose no power through transmission.

For ultimate robust-ness and simplicity, go for an old Mardave, their cool i think they use them for R/c banger racing , also available on ebay as a robin reliant.
mardave mini stock on eBay Cars Battery Operated, Cars, Radio-Controlled, Toys Games (item 260144797092 end time 04-Aug-07 15:10:03 BST) Thats a tough car!

*NEW* RELIANT ROBIN OVAL RACER MARDAVE BANGER BASED on eBay Cars Battery Operated, Cars, Radio-Controlled, Toys Games (item 160142653811 end time 05-Aug-07 19:55:01 BST)

VINTAGE RARE 1986 TAMIYA BIGWIG KIT No 5857 - NEW BOXED on eBay Cars Battery Operated, Cars, Radio-Controlled, Toys Games (item 190134572408 end time 02-Aug-07 15:46:49 BST)

As you don't know the challenges, how about a big-wheeled jobbie, incase there's water crossing or somthing?

something like this, or Venessas Lunchbox (sure it was called that).

Mmmmm - The Egress was awesome - ALWAYS wanted one of those! I've got a Terra Scorcher - four wheel drive, really fast and does awesome drifts! Wish I had one of those gold motors though!

Tell me about it. I remember seeing an Avante for £80 because they couldn't sell it. Now in the box they are over a grand

My first RC car was a wild one - cheapest in the box is over £200.

it was when I had them.
I got the Hornet (next one up!), then I think Frog, Boomerang, My brother's Lunchbox (that sounds so wrong!), and Bigwig

really wanted and Optima or Rocky, but didn't do enough paper rounds (kids'll spend more than that on top-ups these days).

Once broke the long jump record (according to Blue Peter) of around 16', by putting Boomerang the length of the garden, through hedge and down a 7 foot drop onto the road. Probably didn't count...

~I think my 3 year old girl is ready for one now

I always wanted one of those, only by the time I had the money to get one, I did not have the time to use it I think I was about 16 when I got the cash together, so instead I saved it towards a real car.

I still have the feeling I want one though, maybe one day

I loved those days!!!

I started on Tamiya when I was 13. My dad bought me a Boomerang for Xmas and I loved it but, as young kids do, I never looked after it.

Had many friends that were into them aswell but as they got bored or broke them I bought them off them.

My Tamiya cars:
Boomerang
Falcon
Bigwig
Clod Buster
Vanquish
Avante 2001
Striker (even worse than Grass Hopper)
Hot Shot (earlier version of Boomerang with ball races)

Sorry, a completely unhelpful post, but nostalgic talk of early r/c cars just sent me up to the loft....just found an old Tamiya Monster Beetle, remnants of a lunch box and my fav old 2wd, kyosho raider! Those were the days.

Loads of your mates fighting over the few remaining radio frequency crystals and then 10 mins of mayhem followed by someone going home in a strop because a lost 1p grub screw had come loose mid race!!

Hi all,

Update: None of the above would make the cut at £40 including postage, but managed to pick up a Tamiya QuickDrive Impreza off fleabay for £25. Result.

Lets' hope it does okay in the challenges.... I do know they're nippy and agile (well, at this price anyway!) as I used to sell and demo the entire Tamiya range for Beatties about 17 years ago..!!! lol!!

I know one competitor bought a Maserati LM something-or-other off Amazon. Not sure how well that'll do.... I also suspect another has bought a RC Hummer with spinners on the wheels..!!!!

Looking forward to this, should be fun. Now, where can I get upgrade parts without the others knowing..?!! Mwahahahahaaaaa
