Default School Year / Age Range

This is a question for those who have kids.

What are the age ranges for those in:
1) Year R
2) Year 6

Cheers

It depends if you're talking reception year groups or teaching year groups. In general:
Under 5 - Reception
5-7 - Keystage 1, Infants, Year Group 1-2
7-11 - Keystage 2, Juniors, Year Group 3-6
11-14 - Keystage 3, Secondary, Year Group 7-9
14-16 - Keystage 4, Secondary, Year Group 10-11

Reception YG's can vary a bit depending on when in the year a child is bourn and teaching TG's can vary based on the child's ability.

Never understood why they don't start school Year Groups to match ages of kids. So the first September of a child's life he/she is Year 0. So later on Year 12 actually meant 12-year olds. Not rocket science.

Because these groups are used in IT systems to determine teaching groups rather reflecting actual child age.

So IT systems rule over common sense then?

The only people who can easily relate a real age to a Teaching Group age are teachers. Parents certainly can't.

.. or go back to the good old days of 1st year to 6th form (upper and lower). "You're only a first year" is far more derogatory than "You're only a year seven."

It's a bit like complaining that the IT industry use Megabytes. It's industry terminology.
