Default Ministers smoked dope at Uni

Does anyone really care?

BBC NEWS | Politics | Home secretary: I smoked cannabis

As a guy just said on the radio - if they were on heroin now, then maybe we should worry - but other than that, who really cares?

I suppose the issue is that ministers are now arguing for harsher classification and sentences as there is more evidence of dope smoking causing mental health problems. If this is true, surely those MPs that smoked dope ought to have to be evaluated by a pyschologist before they can resume thier duties

The question should be - did she inhale?

What a load of old trollop. At least if they've tried stuff when they were young then at least they know what they are dealing with. Can't people realise that you grow up when you are older and just cos you smoked a bit of weed when you are young you don't always end up some druggie junkie!

Who cares.

Other than the media struggling for a story for reaosn amongst Iraq/Afganistan/Russia, obviously.

Given the relative damage done to families, individiuals, innocent parties etc, it should be far more contraversial for a an MP to be caught smoking a gigarette, or drinking alcohol. But then, of course, they are the acceptable, tax revenue raising, class A drugs.

Exactly!

Plus a bit of dope is a lot less harmful to society than a dozen pints of Stella a.k.a. "Wife Beater".

I think the point is this comes just as reclassification back to a Class B drug is on the agenda for THC related products.

Personally I don't care if they smoke dope, crank up heroin, do rocks, pop pills, smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol as long as they operate probity. Sadly they don't.

Just before the 'I've never tried anything and I'm utterly naive but it's still all evil as far as I'm concerned - Anti Drugs Brigade put their twopence in and this whole debate raises it's ugly head on Scoobynet for about the zillionth time...

Surely we can agree that:

1) Dope 'appears' to be relatively harmful to teenagers if they smoke a hell of a lot of stronger skunk types etc and can induce psychotic episodes during your teens

2) Or...it's not exactly going to help if you are predisposed to panic anxiety

3) And yes, it's potentially carcinogenic (especially when smoked with tobacco)

4) And obviously too much and you'll turn into a lazy barsteward

Other than that..................

Not nearly as damaging to society or family as alcohol, nicotine and many prescription drugs

There.....just thought I'd get that in before we all go round and round for another 8 pages

Think with politicians it's a very thin dividing line between the two Les

I think that some of the posts miss the point.

The question is - should someone who smoked (and enjoyed) dope illegally in the past make laws that could mean people in the same position now could get arrested? In my view they shouldn't and they should distance themselves from legislation they don't agree with. Instead, they go along with the party line.

I don't subscribe to the view that because you once held a given point of vire, you should be held to that beleif for the rest of your life. I completely disagree with the reclassification, but one of the many things that is wrong with politics is the unwillingless of MPs and the media to portray a chage of heart as anything other than a display of weakness.

Yes, I agree with you - there is no problem with a change of heart.

However, if you are law maker then maybe there should be other responsibilities. My point is, if they enjoyed the odd joint - no problem. However, they should then oppose any harsher legislation being introduced - not back it.

I don't really care about dope smokers, but surely we should be able to prosecute individuals who have openly admitted to smoking it, especially as they are in positions of power.

I would just love there to be a random drug test of all politicians - wonder who still does enjoy a puff or a line before primeministers question time...

Question

To slightly digress, how many spliffs, pints, lines etc. would you have to have before you'd consider ******** her?

Personally, about 7 or 8 pints.....

eh... hello ?

Think I once drove at 100mph on a motorway once, I've got quite a responsible job, so I should be prosecuted

Think if they were sitting in the house of commons banging on a big spliff then there may just be justification for being charged but what's in the past is in the past ..... and if they weren't caught at the time then so be it

I'd like to see that paragraph in the news/papers!!

IMO, reclassification back up the list is a step in the wrong direction, it should be going the other way. And i'm sure the police/most of the public agree.

Suppose we should let child molesters off too, after all many of those events happened decades ago.

I disagree with that strongly and I bet that most sensible people will say it should be Class A. It is the first step on the slippery slope.
