Mega Structures - CH5 yesterday
Covered the construction of the Queen Mary 2.
Pretty sad we don't have the ability to build liners like that anymore in this country (they built it in France).
Some stats that I remembered...
In order to meet the spec wanted by Cunards owner (50% of all passenger cabins to have private balconies) they had to make the ship so wide it won't fit through the Panama Canal.
It's only in port for 11 hours.
When in port it takes on enough fuel to drive a car to the moon and back 70 times.
The fuel bill alone is £500,000
For every hour it's out at sea it earns £30k.
On each 6 day voyage it uses the equivalent power to that of 200,000 homes.
Very impressive! Although in todays Carbon footprint obsessed climate I'm surprised Greenpeace aren't demanding it be scrapped!
Next week they're covering the construction of those islands in Dubai that are in the shape of the world.

I saw it - I'm strangely fascinated by major civil engineering projects....
I do remember the visiting day accident - it was all over the news at the time.
I would love to sail across the Atlantic in it - but only in black and white! I think I saw one too many old movies and I'd be pretty dissapointed if I didn't bump into Cary Grant on board....

I'd love to go on it. I would have to look at what route it would take, as it did say the ship went past Cape Horn too. It would be well cool to start in the UK, hop over to the US and then cruise down past all the Americas before rounding the horn. I don't get sea sick, and that must be a voyage to remember.
I just came back from a Balkans cruise, and the best on ship moments were in the North Sea when I was nicely rocked to sleep (pipe and slippers comments expected )
