Just got a service award from work of a £1000 and feel i should buy something worthwhile with it.

Any suggestions what to spend it on?

Question

Good grief, what sort of work gives £1000 awards and for what length of service?

My mate got £250 for 25 years as an engineer on the local steelworks.

Any job with the title "Engineer" in it, is, by default, exempt from any sort of decent bonus.

Any job that contributes absolutely **** all to society, and is simply a parasitic employ, earning money off the back of other industries/people - I.e. any Job with the title "Agent" in it, is, by default, elligable to enourmous bonuses.

Not a bad idea.

Or buy a nice painting - currently thinking of "investing" in some decent artwork.

In that case, I like Matteeboy's art suggestion. Maybe something locally connected?

What would a bloke expect to get for £1000 and wouldn't you get tired with a 25 year service contract?

I wouldn't get anything electronic, you're marking a special occasion so I'd get something that would last, something you can look at in twenty years and remember what is was about.

The art is a good idea, maybe commission someone up and coming?
Or how about something like custom made cufflinks from someone like Stephen Einhorn? All top notch stuff but loads of people doing similar...
