MRI scan, any feedback and also taking in your own music??
after being fecked about for near on a year finally got an NHS scan sorted
got all the info through this morning and was wondering if people who've had it done could tell me what to expect? from what i've heard it's a cluastrophbic(?) noisy tunnel?
was a bit surprised that you can take your own cd to be played, never heard this, i guess they're expecting whale music or something do you think they'd mind if i took something a bit more *ahem* lively?
on a serious note though, the bit about the metal fragments in the eyes is a bit of a worry. over the years (like quite a few) i've got the odd bit of crap in my eye, no idea if it's still there or not though. are they talking about fragments that have needed treatment or just any bits in general?
any advice much appreciated.

It's cool m8, I had one last summer, got my lip pierced and was allowed to keep it in. She said "if it starts to feel warm let me know"
It is noisy in there and a little bit boring but nothing to worry about for a grown up.

hi i have had 3 mri scans done they are very tight if you are a big chap
the noise is very loud and my last one was 1 hr which is quite a long time
you can take a friend in with you to talk to help you thourgh it
your eyes will be x-rayed before you go in the scanner
there are new portable ones which only scan the part of the body needed
they look like polo mints
the bad part is its like being in a coffin but you now the both ends are open
the best thing to do is close your eyes and think of being somewhere else
good luck
ps when you go shopping after all the trolleys will magnitise them self to you

Hello
My wife unfortunately has regular MRI scans and her experience is that they are claustraphobic and not a pleasant experience. Not painful, just a bit freaky if that kind of thing bothers you.
If you are not worried about confined spaces (or don't have a low attention threshold) you should be fine.
There is a new one coming (and advertised all over American Television) that is much better:

I was going to say, if you are in any doubt about possible metal fragments in your eyes, tell them that you can't be certain and as mentioned above they will xray your eyes prior to the scan.
It's not worth the risk if you are in doubt.
As for the scan itself.. I just found it uncomfortable having to lie perfectly still for ages and listening to the machine loudly whirring away.

Ive got to have a MRI scan on the 31st August. I just thought you were in and out?
1hr ?? I didnt think it was anywhere near that lenght of time.
To be honest I have been trying not to think about it :-( I am having a scan due to a hearing problem, and I thought it was just my missis mumbeling.

It can certainly take a while, my wife is in 'the machine' for at least 30 minutes, then a pause and then some more.
(sorry)

P.s. I actually fell asleep in there "honestly!", mine was roughly an hour long to as it was a full body scan. As mentioned above if your a big lad it will feel a bit tight but lucky for me i'm not so it really didn't bother me in the slightest AND i suffer from anxiety so there you go m8, nowt to worry about.

i have had a couple of MRI scans and i usually just fall asleep when im on there , makes it easier for you and them as your not supposed to move. if you have metal fragments in your head just tell them as i have some metal in mine from a previous accident but it didnt make any difference but they still like to know

I was told I'd have to wait 17 weeks and got one in 5.
ditto other comments, very boring and the hardest part is staying still - make sure you're very comfortable when they start, I had to lie with my arm out stretched, sounds easy but it certainly wasnt, you think you're starting to get rigor mortis!

I've had quite a few MRI scans and have another one quite soon. No noise at all on a decent scanner. That'd be one where you put the supplied headphones on and fall asleep listening to chill out tunes.
The fan blowing cool air can be a pain as it gets quite cold. I always request it's turned off as it's never stuffy.
Nothing to it, just not something you'd put on your list of 'must do's'.

wow, cheers for the many replies
lol, got a big nose so it might be a squeeze it's on my spine and that's a bit of a git staying still if it gets painfull, just have to wait and see.
booklet says 20-40 mins, but hey NHS says alot of things
the time involved has been the poxiest part of the whole saga to be honest, i've was refered to a specialist about 18 months ago, then some other assesment, then psysio (waste of fecking time, then refered back to GP!!)
my doctor to be honest has played a blinder, he was having no joy getting me further treatment at my local hospital so tried a bit further away (medway) got knocked back from there (bit of a long story) but he wasn't happy with this so went back to the board and they relented.
from then it's been full steam ahead and from having an assesment last tue. i've got the scan appointment for 11th august
can only guess they **** you about for so long they hope you'll go private, then when you haven't gone away things pick up speed!
this listening to music thing, is this the norm? only asking as i can really drift off with some tunes so might help
was typing as you posted spoon, would you say that one that offers music is a quieter one then?

The newer scanner that I've used (albeit 4 years ago, so not that new) had headphones that you wear listening to the music of your choice. The older scanner just had music piped in the tube and it had to compete with the noise of the machine.
The scanner operator can interrupt the music and talk to you via the headphones if she/he needs to tell you something.

Ive lost count how many scans I have had, 7 years of them every 6 -12 weeks, sometimes every 6 weeks, sometimes every 12, but 7 years of them
I almost used to drop off everytime I had one
The newer machines are so much faster these days
Breathe in, hold your breathe (whirrrr, whirrrrr, whizzzzz) and breathe out, 20 odd times each scan
thesedays just one pass and done

lol at the post counts
I had Cancer twice many years ago, so as part of remission I had to spend many an hour having the scans done, because it came back after two years they changed to 6 weekly scans, and also moved onto 6 weekly scans when I was having all the Chemo too
the last one I had was a brain one, as I suffer from Cluster Headaches, but thankfully not had them in a while now

It was a while ago now, been clear for about 7 years or so, however as a warning to all others (and ill probably get slated for this) but I do still smoke, other than the episodes of cluster headaches, and quite bad colds occasionally ive been pretty/reasonably healthy since then
