Default Dog has got a nose bleed, lot of blood

Just been out to the dog, and the conservatory is covered in blood

First thoughts were that the dog had got another bird, or even a rabbit

But I couldnt find anything, and then I noticed a bit of blood from his left nostril

He has been sneezing a lot the last day or two, but tonight there is a lot of blood now, and it looks like he has been sneezing it out

He is a Chocolate Lab with a bit of collie in him and he is 2 years old

Any ideas

If it doesn't stop after 10-15 mins call a vet. Try to keep him relaxed and don't let him show you're stressed.

Ive just tried to clean his nose a little, to see if it is cut or coming from inside

It is coming from inside, and there was a thick lump what looked like a clot, the rest of it is thin splatters, he does have some inside his mouth on his tongue, but not if that is due to him going round licking all the blood up

Check for splinters from biting sticks etc. Is he still bleeding?

It could even be a blade of grass lodged in his nostril. Vet will need to check it out. d

yes still bleeding, it isnt pouring out, but difficult to tell exactly how much it is bleeding, as he keeps licking his nose, and still sneezing

Another clot has come out

going to phone the vets now see what they say

Just phoned them

They asked if he is eating and drinking, which he is, although a couple of days ago he was off his water, but then we have had nothing but rain, so may have still got water somehow

He is reasonably lively, and jumps, comes to me, as per normal

Vet said I could take him in, and it will be 87 quid plus a fee for any treatment, (the 87 is just to see him) plus after midnight it goes up to 147 quid, she said as he is still eating drinking and lively etc then maybe just see how he is and take him to my normal vets tomorrow

She said its quite possible that the sneezing he has been doing has caused the nosebleed

Blade of grass is interesting David, as I mowed the lawn yesterday, and I have found clumps of grass in places they shouldn't have been

I have looked down his nose but cant physically see anything

Our Cavalier had similar. Sneezing for a couple of days and breathing not great (they "snort" anyway because they have short noses!). No bleeding but took her to the vet where she did turbo sneeze and sprayed the surgery with claret

Vet stuck some tweezers up and pulled out 3" blade of grass! Instant recovery.

Very good chance your lab has similar?? I'd say she would be OK till tomorrow.

Let us know. d

He tends to snort a bit, or rather has been doing lately, I put that down to the constant change in weather and getting a cold

all the kids and Donna have a cold now too,

Thats quite possible that it was a turbo sneeze that caused this tonight, i keep checking on him and its part bleeding still, but mixed with cold snot and comes out on a tissue as slightly pink to red

only 3 or 4 fresh drops of blood in the conservatory, and strangley not a single drop outside

hopefully he will be ok through the night, and see how he is in the morning

I just want to add that the floor looks like a massacre has taken place

I thought towards the end of last week he seemed to have a cold of sorts with him sneezing and his nose was dripping clear fluid everywhere

His nose is bubbling now, with a mix of some blood and clear snot

I had a thought earlier, I filled up the bird feeder with bird seed and nuts, and the dog was sniffing round the dropped seeds

I am now wondering whether one has got lodged in his nostril

If he is no better in the morning I shall take him to the vets

OK things look a lot worse this morning

the blood is just leaking from his nose now, and what looks like a large pile of deep red & white something, not sure if he has been sick in the night, but that lot certainly cant have come from his nose

Ive had to come into work for an hour, but I am leaving shortly to go home to take him to the vets

Mark, DL, thank you

This pool Sonic mentioned, it almost looks like his insides Reminded me of intestines, but there's a few lumps rather than a whole something

It really was not a nice sight to come down to, I would say there's none of the floor we can walk on without standing in blood Yet it seemed to have stopped last night before we went to bed!

I don't know if all of this is connected to what seemed like a cold towards the end of last week or there is something that he's sniffed up and got lodged

I guess we will find out soon enough when we pop to the vets, poor thing

In all fairness though, they said if it stopped then to leave him until today, and it did stop, we had a late night last night and he was fine.

Nothing prepared us for what we came down to this morning, or what has just happened, I think I will let Sonic post the update as I am too upset.

This thread is grim.
Our little black lab really hurt her leg and I thought she'd broken it - that was bad enough.

The news sounds bad...

I have just been home and got him to the vets

Now the vets is only a mile from the house, and the boot of the car now looks like a major bloodbath, I got covered in blood just putting his harness and lead on

They have admitted him in for observation, testing, x-rays, and are going to give him some vitamin K

Whilst in the vet room, Scooby threw up, what looked like about a pint of thick blood mixed in with some undigested food

He is snorting quite a lot and it does really seem to be bothering him, yet he is still wagging his tail and barking at other dogs, and will sit, jump up etc

I am getting concerned over the amount of blood he has now lost

Like Donna said I went to bed at 2am, and spent a bit of time with him last night before coming to bed, and it had eased off, no fresh spots of blood only slight bubbling from his nose and he seemed settled

The bubbling from his nose was primarily clear liquid, much as we get with a runny nose, and was only ever so slightly pink

His stools have all be ok, and he has ate as per normal, but his drinking has eased off despite giving him 2 bowls of water a day

I didnt check this morning if he had drank any water from his bowl

The Vet said he may be he has a clotting problem (but I dont quite see that as he sneezed up a couple of clots yesterday evening) or it could be something lodged in him

She also suggested the possibilty of rat poison too, and as the weather has been quite torrential rain wise, it does have a tendency to bring a few rats from the field (according to my neighbour that is) as several years ago on the last big flood (ten miles of farmers fields at the back of the house) there was a massive rat invasion and the previous owners to my house lost a very large stock of birds (as they used to have an aviary)

Now I have checked all round the garden, and there are no dead animals, he hasnt ate a bird for quite some time

I have to phone the vets back at 1.30 this afternoon to check on how he is doing

Sonic - bloody hell - fingers crossed for you.

DK1 - she was okay in the end - couldn't walk on it for a week but she recovered -just a nasty sprain. Bricked it when she did it as her paw went the wrong way and she yelped a hell of a lot (plus I was "in charge" so felt guilty!).
