Any project manager contractors around???
Hi Guys,
Just doing some research into PM contractor rates as it seems to vary considerably. Does anyone know what the average rates are for a PRINCE2 qualified Project manager - junior, middleweight, senior?
Also what % do agencies tend to take - is it better to deal direct and keep the 15% to yourself?
Also, is it better to do your own payroll or get the agency to do a PAYE?
Cheers
Richard

I've been a contract project manager for many years and rates vary considerably depending on experience, industry, project type, length of contract etc etc. being fully certified Prince II practitioner helps, particularly for gov projects, but would say 250 junior, 300-500 mid, and senior anything above. I remember the dot.com boom era being very lucrative!

Cheeky sod
I think it all depends on your industry.
I have Prince2 Practitioner, but work in the Financial Services industry and find it easier to get BA work, than PM, simply because there are more of those roles about.
I do know of PM's who are on upto £1000 a day.
Its always an 'experience' thing though as these guys are 'known' in the industry.
If in doubt the follwing explains project management

I support Kiwi - you will struggle to get in as an independent. You can get work but need a strong network of buyers.
I would pay up to £750 for a senior PM with strong business content. I would pay maybe £400-500 for a jobbing project manager. Experience is more important than Prince2 other than for contracts requiring some form of certification.
The % I could make on reselling varies on what the client pays, anything from 10% to 100% (rare but it does occur for short term distress purchases!). Large volume agencies take between 10% and 30%. Depends on their client contract. Some are cost plus arrangements with open book pricing.

There again, maybe our views of project management are different?

Its not too bad, just listen to the trainer - its as much what they (PRINCE2) want you to say as what is common sense....
One guy who was on a freinds course spent the whole week telling us what he knew rather than listening to what he needed to learn. He failed and effectively lost his job as he needed a P2 to stop people being promoted above him - plus he was a bit of a ****!
Who are you doing it through?

PRINCE2 is so bureaucratic!!!
As for wages, just recruiting and my budget my £500-£700 per day for a card management BA/PM. Anyone have the skills, PM me!!!
As a PM myself, think I may go contracing myself!

It was open book when I took it. So you need to know where everything is IN the book.
There will always be a question on 'Roles' within a project.
A point is always given extra, if you remember to put in the 'Configuration Librarian' into your list/diagram.
Also, when I took it I think each point related to 10minutes in effort for time, so do not take 60minutes to answer a 1 point question. Obvious, I know, but I know people who have failed.
I passed first time, but I did a weeks residential course out of my own money 5/6 years ago when i first went contracting.
