Default Mobile Phone Tracking.. Possible without handset ?

Friend of mine has lost his mobile, fell out his pocket while on his motorbike, somewhere on about a 4-5 mile stretch.
Is there any service which would allow him to track it to a more acurate position, without having to first activate from the handset?

I suspect not..

I think that if there is all you'll get is the 'cell' location. Although I have heard that the police can possbily triangulate to track it to a few meters. Not sure if it's true or not.

I've asked my service provider before when I lost my phone and there was nothing they could/would do.

Pushbike answer seem the best so far.
