I have the joy of having to drive to Kendal this afternoon. I want to keep off the M1 as J6 - 13 is chaos.

How about

M40 to M6

or

A1 North and then cut across country ?

Both will be slow, but which one the slowest !!

Personally I'd take the M40/M42/M5/M6 route should be quicker than the A1 (traffic/accidents permitting) depending on the time of day your leaving.

Preferred cross country route:

M1 to J24a
A50 to Stoke

Always used to enjoy the A5 but a lot of speed cameras now.

Can't advise on avoiding M1 J6-13 I'm afraid.

That's another possibility if you really are adamant you want to avoid J6-13

M25/M11/A14/M1/A50/M6 fairly long winded mind.

I'd keep an eye/ear to traffic reports, as anyone of the above routes could become jammed, and the M1 could be flowing fine.

A14 is a nightmare, even when its not a friday id go M25, M40, M42, M6 toll, M6.
