Default Cherished number....holding sale up

Was hoping to part with my car this weekend.Cash purchaser.

Problem is DVLA tell me not to part with car till cherished plate is put 'on retention'..........which could take ,wait for it........... 2-7 WEEKS

Any ideas? Thought about transferring onto the wife's car,but it will still take blooming time to do a formal transfer.

Any help much appreciated

Can't they do it straight away if you go to your local DVLA office?

I've always had it put straight on at the DVLA office but i'm not sure if they can do that when they take it off as they need to assign a plate to go back onto the car it's coming off It might be worth a phone call.

I've done that twice with cars I've transferred plates on, in both cases the original number was put straight back on, using the original plates that I'd kept. If you've put the cherised number on then I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem.

Did the same about 8 weeks ago. Took 5 weeks to get the V5 back from DVLA with the original number on. All they do if you take it to the local office is take the paperwork from you, it still has to go in the post to Swansea from them to get the new v5 issued. Guy we sold the car to (trader) was being held up by 5 different cars for exactly the same reason.

Cheers.Sounds like attending personally at the local office won't help.

Wondering whether I could strike a deal with the buyer to agree to transfer at a later date.Take some money as security from him.

Probably opening a can of worms here.Must be some solution

I went to the DVLA local office and they told me 5-7 weeks. In the end, bit my tongue and did it, the car was already sold. Despite telling me 5-7 weeks, 5 days and the retention certificate was through my door.

Yup....a real pain in the backside.

I live not far from the DVLA swansea and when they were in their old offices (poxy little hole in Morriston) they used to do it on the spot while you waited.

They then get a MUCH bigger new local office in Llansamlet enterprise park and what's this.....it now takes up to 5 weeks sir. But you've got new state of the art offices and more staff and it now takes 5 times as long?!?!?!?

The last time I put my plate on retention the certificate actually came from the DVLA office in Poole!! So i drop it into Swansea, they send it to Poole and they send it back to me......brilliant plan!!!

Go figure

At least there is such a thing as retention now! Back in the day before the Mickey Mouse plates were available you needed as many cars as you had plates!!
