First day at new job tomorrow
As some know I recently handed my notice in as a Drawing Controller working in a design office as my employer wasn't prepared to pay me accordingly for the amount of work I was doing, plus effectivley giving someone else my job and making me switch between 2 departments. I was also told I wouldn't be considered for other roles and that if I wanted to progress I should think about going else where. I did and Friday was my last day!.
On Monday I'm due to start at Norwich Union as a Customer Service Representative in the Life business part of the company. I'll be in the Operations Delivery Department. From what I know about the role so far I'll be dealing with peoples accounts and transferring funds etc, including doing the same for a number of business' which deal with NU. Although working at NU it appears I'll actually be employed by Aviva.
Its not really a career I had considered for myself as I used to be a Fabricator, some may remember that thread too! I've applied here several times though and have finally got the experience they want it seems.
I'll be taking a risk as I'll be on quite a low wage, I'm told there are pay reviews every 3 months, or when ever I feel I should have one. I'm also told by other people that its easy to progress and gain promotion. So I'm hoping this is a good decision and the pay cut will be for the greater good!
I'm getting quite nervous now though! After 1 year at my previous job I was getting quite comfortable with my surroundings, especially seen as though it was my first office role. I'm now having to start all over again and I don't expect to get much sleep tonight thinking about whats going to happen and wether come 5pm tomorrow evening I'll be leaving thinking I've made a big mistake and that I won't want to go back on Tuesday!

I hope by some miracle this isn't the case with your particular role but when I worked there I soon found that NU want evey last second out of you in the working day. The only way to progress there was to work extra hours for free and live the brand.

Good luck Marc, I took a pay cut to go where I am now and it has worked out much better in the end, both in lifestyle, environment, career plan and colleagues.
Pay has improved quicker than the old welding job too. :

You will be fine
Norwich Union is part of Aviva Group which is is the 6th largest Insurance group in the world - Norwich Union Life is the biggest single part of it.
You will be employed by Aviva Employee Services which is simply a legal way of doing your payslips and pension.
In terms of 'living the brand' I think most companies would hope that you would live their brand to be successful. I know I would absolutely expect that in my company!

Update on my first day!
I got myself there quite early to get myself parked up, when I got to the barrier the security guard informed me that I wasn't allowed to use the car park! Great start! No one told me! He suggested I park in the Park & Ride car park. I went there got a token and was told it would only be validated if I got on the bus, NU is only round the corner! So I left whilst the token would still allow me to leave and parked in Asda, 3 hour limit! Great! At 11am I moved to Monks Cross car park and the sign said 4 hours! I was then told that if I had got a differant bus at the P&R they would take me to NU and validate my token! The useless guy there never told me that!
So far my day was off to a brilliant start!
I was greeted and given a quick tour followed by being shown to my terminal, full internet and e mail but I'm not allowed to use it for personal use ie - Not even at dinner
To start with I was given a series of aptitude tests such as Disbality & Discrimination, Health & Safety and Data Protection Act. I read what was on the screen then had a test at the end. I had to get 85% on each test to pass. I passed the first one then the second went back to the beginning after I'd done it grr! Same happened with a few others too. The Descrimination one was quite difficult but I got through it in the end!
To be honest I was getting a bit fed up by this point! I don't know anything about Data Protection so that took me a few goes! Eventually I did them all and got results ranging from 85-97%.
For the remainder of the afternoon I was put with a lad who was checking companies account details against their other details on the system and linking them up. It all looked a bit daunting at first but then he let me have a go, I'm sure it becomes second nature eventually! I'm getting moved in a few weeks so don't think its my actual role/team.
So parking issues aside it hasn't gone that bad to be honest. Everyone seems friendly enough, and atleast I'm not doing those bloody enquiries anymore!

Or be a tidy advisor, show a bit of nouse and get a Team leader job. Extra 5k a year and only one promotion away from thirty grand a year as a Duty Manager. Call centres are guff on the whole, but the right person can progress quickly and earn a reasonable wage.
