Negotiating sticker prices at garages
I'm traditionally a private sale/private purchase sort of guy when it comes to buying cars but we are replacing our day to day car and will probably trail the garages so that we have a bit more come back and security. However, I have no idea what I can reasonably hope to secure by way of a discount on the sticker price. If you saw a warm hatch with £3995 plastered over the window what would you see as a reaonable haggle? Would you be dreaming to try and get that down to £3400 for example? Any tips for securing a good deal? I'm so crap at this! I'm just not a salesman, negotiator type!

Kenny, having worked in the trade for years (although in a different capacity) i think these tips are invaluable to anyone.
Most places that sell cars in Scotland are either owned by Evans HAlshaw (Old Reg Vardy) or Arnold Clark.
The type of GM & SM's they employee are figures driven as is they want to sell as many units as possible but with retaining profit.
What i would say is to make sure you go in & view the car you want & speak to a salesman, once he thinks you have a feel for the car give him your details ie name, number that sort of thing. Then go for a deal, you say the car is 4k ... well hit him with 3k & stay at that, look at his reaction & also bear in mind the salesman 95% of the time doesnt make the final decision its down to the manager. Stick to your guns at 3k & dont move. Walk away if you can but play them.
Give it a day & if the car is still there they will call you, tell them that you will deal at 3k.
Try it & post your results.
Good Luck

I can only give you what I've experienced and has worked for me when buying a car. Never tell the sales man what you're prepared to pay. They will try everything to get this figure out of you. Try get them to give you a figure of what they're prepared to sell it at and then you work from that figure. Silence helps immensly, it'll force them to talk, its a game of cat and mouse and may give you an offer until you respond. Beware though, as not all sales people are stupid and will know this is what you are trying to do. It helps your bargaining if you have a figure from another garage for a similar spec car.

Thing is with asking for free road tax is that they are then paying money to a third party which obviously they don't like to do - try asking for free MOT's for as long as you own the car or the next service at 50%....things that they make money on anyway so can afford to bargain with.

Mother in law wanted a used Focus and asked me to go with her to the dealers.
Before she'd even sat inside a car I'd got her 500 off the screen price of 5995
I believe I could have got he the car for 5000 easily, but the silly old cow said:
"I'll have it, will you take a cheque as a deposit" before I had chance to ram my fist in her gob!
I then tried to negotiate a further discount insid ethe showroom but SHE wouldn't let me
Last time I go with her to buy a car

I'd like to think I could get £3995 down to £3500 - doesn't seem like a big ask.
Take a notepad, list all minor scratches, imperfections, tyre wear, discs pads etc etc etc then say to the salesman that considering x,y and z £3500 is all you are prepared to pay. They all have margins to make on each car and as long as he makes his minimun they just want it off the forecourt. Sure you'll get it ono bother
Good luck
