Basically, my phone will not recognise any sim card in it......unfortunately, all my numbers are stored on the phone and not the sim.....
Is there any way I can access the numbers without the sim....

are your numbers not saved to the sim, IIRC mine saved them to both.
if not, only thin ad suggest is try one of those mobile fone shops, the ones that unlock them and that kind of thing, they might be able to help, sounds like physical damage rather than a software problem

The numbers may be saved to the phone's memory card. Removing that and placing it in a card reader will yield the information you require.
If the phone does not have a removable memory card, or has not saved its numbers there it is almost certain that you can get the numbers back. Phone shops may be able to do it, or you may need some sort of data recovery service. It is just a question of cost, as the type of memory in a phone is very robust. If you are going to use data recovery, don't mess around with it too much before you take it to them, the more you play with it, the harder their job.

that man speaks sense
(assuming you get a bill, and have some clue what your mates numbers are. Otherwise you will have to call all those "random" numbers on your bill, thinking fast on your feet when someone answers )
