Why is the Apple iPod not compatible with OS 9.1 ??
#1
My girlfriend is after an MP3 player for xmas, and as a mac user, the ipod is the obvious choice. Have been looking at the spec and it seems to need OS 9.2 or newer. I have a G4 with firewire running OS 9.1, and was wondering why on earth that cant run it ?
Any other mac users out there that know the answer ??

I'll find out. More than likely to do with the firmware. Are you aware that Apple only offer a 90 day warranty with NO DOA period on this product !!
Thats why many dealers have increased the prices of the ipod.

have been looking at various apple tech things, looks like the reason for requiring 9.2.1 is that this is the first version of the OS where Apple said that the items supported are the same for OS X and 9.x
So, in breif, 9.2.1 is the first OS to properly support whatever revision of firewiere the iPod uses, no doubt if it's possible some ingenious soul will create an app for pre 9.2.1 support.
Why you not running 9.2.1on the iMac??

Thanks for the info fellas. May leave it for now then.
Markus: Currently running OS 9.1 on one of the original G4 towers. I think it shipped with 8.6 but had it up-graded to what was the current release when the hard disk gave up. It’s my work machine so don’t really want to spend money on it myself upgrading/cause any future problems with compatability with my work apps..... It’s running really stable at the moment.
