It didn't?
Sh*t, I was hoping the WHOLE SouthEast of England was now somewhere in the middle of the North Sea, and the rest of the country could get some of the things they get all of at the moment

We do actually get a few earthquakes, there is no where on the planet you can escape them, but we are not on a plate like say japan is so ours are normally not too bad, though for any who remember those earthquakes back in about 1999/2000 from the birmingham to manchester area will tell you, you will get minor tremours for the next few days/weeks.

Im in folkestone. Bit of a shock first thing. Walked into the bedroom with cups of tea for me and the misses and all of a sudden, the building starts shaking. We are on the 3rd floor in some flats. Very scary to start with, felt like it lasted for ages but was probably only 10 seconds or so. My 18month old boy just laughed as it happened. No damage to our building but my parents chimney has split in two and they have been advised to evacuate the building, in the interest of safety.

Japan is actually on 3 tectonic plates, that's why it's so geologically active. A 4.6 would pass with barely a mention. Then again, everything is designed to cope with such earthquakes so there really is no need anyway. Japan has had 5 earthquakes of about that magnitude in the last 3 days alone!

They say it lasted for only about 1.5 seconds? The M7.1 earthquake I experienced in Japan in 2004 lasted for 1.5 minutes! Now that's what I call an earthquake.

We had a 4.8 in Sheffield then Tony... I have a friend in Los Angeles and even he admitted that a 4.8 is quite a decent shake! For some reason Birmingham's much smaller event (4.2) took most of the news airtime, despite ours being several times greater (the Richter scale is log based so +.3 is twice the shake).

HI all,

I'm in Dover and had just jumped in to bed after doing a night shift, only to be woken up twenty minutes later with the bed shaking like on of those American motel jobbies..lol!!!

House was doing a good shake and did a bit creaking afterwards, but it came through the war, so I think it'll be fine..!!

First time for me in an earthquake, it got the pulse going a bit, then everyone was out in the street wondering what was going on. I first thought it was an explosion on the Docks. I'm at the far west end of Dover too, so quite near Folkestone.

The main thing though was that there were no falling tiles or chimneys in the vicinity of my Scoob

Nige,
Dover aka Quake Country.

welcome to the shaky world!!

GeoNet – Recent New Zealand Earthquakes

a magnitude 5.0+ is a reasonably decent shake; we've only had one in the past couple of weeks
