Black number plates
#2
They were the original style of number plate before the present white/yellow ones. Still legal to use them if your car is old enough to have had them in the first place as far as I know.

this style was used on cars quite a while ago as standard before the days of white and yellow.
there are loads of cars here on the Isle of Man using them but they are actually illegal unless your car was originally equiped with them from the factory.
looks like i was too slow on this one then

--Traditional plates for vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973
Vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate--
So there you have it ....

after talking to my mate in the plod about this, hes says theres no points, just a £30 fine, but then they may force you to get them changed and retake your MOT at extra cost.
depends on the mood of whoever pulls you.
personally i think they look ok, but i wouldnt want any unwanted attention so wouldnt bother..

Errm - also, Guernsey use these black plates wither silver lettering on all their cars (front and rear). If the car has (for some reason) been registered there, that could explain it. Mind you - Guernsey plates are all just made up of 5 numbers - so you'd probably have noticed if it was that odd!
