I spent a nice day today at Stratford Upon Avon with the family and enjoyed doing a bit of cheesy tourist stuff and was wandering what other places in the UK are nice for a family day out ? Good roads on the way helps as well

Devon & Cornwall are stunning with superb driving, as is the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and Derbyshire Peak District, The Lake District, Wales and Scotland. Anywhere hilly, away from major towns and cities really.

With a name like that there's only one place in the world he could be from

I'd second the Scotland recommendation, I spent many happy summer holidays there as a kid, from Dumfries and Galloway right across to the North East coast I'd recommend the area along the Spey valley, but I'm biased, I got married up there

Highly recommended is a trip up the West Highland Railway from Fort William to Mallaig. Mallaig itself is nothing special, just your typical small fishing port, but the trip to it takes you from the foot of Ben Nevis on through the most spectacularly inhospitable scenery the UK has to offer

PS: Avoid Glasgow it's a dump

Have to go with the North Yorks moors, or the Peak District, or the North Yorks coast too. Robin Hood's Bay is a real treat. If you like historical stuff, you can't do much better than Beamish Living Museum in County Durham. You can spend more than a day wandering around and riding on old trams etc.
We have a wonderful country with lots to see and do, might be something for those England, Gt Britain knockers to take on board before they have another moan.

Pickering (North Yorkshire) is good, you have the North Yorkshire Moore's Railway which will take you to Goathland where they film Heartbeat... Fantastic scenery .. Then not far from there you have the Dolby Forest and the Dolby Forest Drive, again spectacular
