I was startled from my slumber at about 1 this aft (nightshift before anyone calls me lazy) by a loud bang Not sure if I'd dreamed it or one of the cats had knocked something over I stumbled downstairs, grumbling and cursing. I could smell burning and there was a haze in the living room I quickly checked the rest of downstairs and then cautiously opened the cellar door to be greeted by a stronger smell and smoke I made my way to the bottom of the steps to find the mains supply cable, surrounding wall, main 100A fuse and the meter blackened and all power off It looks to have just flashed everything as there was no fire, and I can only guess that the smoke was coming of the cables for some time before the final failure.

Credit to YEB, they got someone 'round within an hour to check it out and a team to fix it within 2 hours. They put it down to the age of the fittings and got on with sorting it and all was fine by 5pm. Lesson learnt for me though, I'll be fitting smoke alarms ASAP

quite often i get woken up by a loud noise and a funny acrid smell-even worse when i lift back covers and realise i have farted lol

I never get woken by banging of any volume (unless its my birthday)......married 10 years probably explains it.
