When's the best time to book flights to the USA (for August)?
I've seen some at £405 - Manchester to Chicago. On or about 20th August.
when's the best time to book, and does anyone have any recommendations for good flight-search websites?
Tried ebookers, Travelocity, Expedia, Travelsupermarket, cheapflights, and Kayak....
any more suggestions, please?

My wife's recently had cancer, and found out only on Saturday that she's all clear ... We found out today that our insurance will cover her, so we're off to the states in August.

For Manchester - Chicago, I guess you'll be flying with BMI so try their website (www.flybmi.com).
£400 for high season sounds pretty good. I just got back from Chicago to Manchester on Sunday having paid about £330 for the tickets. I was at a friends wedding, so we didn't have much flexibility with the dates that we were travelling. I was looking at the BMI website from about September last year and the price for these dates didn't change between then and booking in mid January.
The BMI flight is pretty good. They use Airbus A330s which are one of the quitest aircraft I have ever flown in. The toilets are a good size unlike the cramped things on 747s. You need to pay for alcohol, but soft drinks, fruit juices, coffees, etc., are free.
(Oh, and on your news!)

I remember reading somewhere that airlines reviews seats and prices about 12 weeks before departure. If seats are looking low they will reduce their prices.

I have been looking at flights from the US (new york) to europe for a couple of weeks now and have an observsation. Try changing the time of day and the day of the week that you look. I have seen a variation of $100 on the same flight from day to day.
Also, AA might be a good air line choise for you because that is where their hub is and there is some one oon pistonheads swapping free up grades.
I once got stuck in the UK in between christmas and new year. I managed to get a flight for the next day for 230 quid. Just an idea for those who think new york is expensive at new year.

PM me bud
dates/departure/destination/ and number of pax
will have a look for you
I pay circa $1000 for my monthly BA business class rtns to NYC (where I am now as it happens)...so there are methods , and various software to work things out
It is a myth that prices go up nearer the date- ive never booked a flight more than 6 weeks in advance and I have never payed through the nose either.

We always try American Airlines first, their main hub is Chicago..... their online site allows you to choose the seats at booking aswell.... so, the eiarlier you book, the better seat you'll get too!!

Prices for August/September are always high, don't expect them to drop to the £300 mark, they haven't for a good few years now. £400 is pretty good.

Give Book cheap flights, hotels, car rental, city breaks and package holidays with Opodo a try.
I work for BA and can't get you tickets for anywhere near the £400 mark. Thought i'd found some for £320 but they turned out to be each way
Looking at how much the tickets are on our internal site i'd guess that Chicago is a good earner at that time of year....
