Looking for a sensible solution ...
Bought a new 42" LG Plasma Tv and very happy I am with it at the moment.
My old set-up had Aerial in loft to Freeview Set-Top Box Aerial IN - Aerial OUT to Video Aerial IN - Aerial OUT to DVD Recorder Aerial IN - Aerial OUT to SONY CRT Aerial IN. Scarts covered the various items also.
Worked fine and I could record whatever was selected on the Freeview Box, on either Video or DVD.
Now, my LG Plasma has a built in Digital receiver which replaces my Freeview Box. Set up is as above with the Freeview Box not in the system.
How would I record a Digital signal on the DVD? As far as I know it only has an Analogue Tuner.
The LG Plasma has a Aerial OUT socket (used to run another screen) - could I use this to feed into the DVD Recorder and record what is selected on the TV? Of course, now I would not have the Coax RF Cable going from the DVD to TV (the signal is transferred via S-video). Of course, this means having the TV on.
Am I missing something simple which would allow me to record what I like while watching something else? In the old days the Video would have a Tuner within it and could record whatever you liked while watching something else.
Would I need a recording device which had a Digital Tuner within it?

Oh dear - you should have gone for a CRT, you wouldn't be having these troubles
Leave the freeview in the loop so you can view one channel and record an other.

I think the easiest way is a second freeview box connected into the DVD recorder. I assume the DVD recorder has a coaxial input from an aerial as well as the S-video cable going to the TV. I would imagine it would also be possible to feed the TV coax signal out in to the DVD recorrder. Gets more complicated the more I think about it.
Our Sky box has an aerial out plug for another tv and will feed all tv signals to another TV both satellite and analogue. The Sky box is connected to the DVD recorder and the TV by two Scart cables. I can record analogue or digital but since it is Sky digital not plus I cannot record one satellite programme and watch another. I can record satellite while watching analogue and record any analogue programme while watching another or a satellite programme.
I would have thought you could find a similar method with a bit of experimentation.
Les-almost confused!

At no charge and with no ugly dustbin lid on the house?? Put my name down
No, I ain't paying SKY a penny ....
Putting the Freeview back in the loop could be the answer .... but that would mean splitting the aerial signal (which is already split to feed the dining room TV!) .... don't want to do that .... another aerial could be the answer?

You could always go for a HDD recorder with Freeview (twin tuner preferably). Route the video out to your TV and watch and record that way. Recording on DVD must be a pain finding and organizing the disks...

TBH - considering how long you've been going on about TVs I'm surprised you hadn't researched how you were going to hook it all up and get the facilities you want BEFORE you bought the damn thing!

Trendy solution would be to output the decoded signals from the telly to the DVD-R via SCART, digital or WTF-out.
Sensible real-world solution is to use the freeview box on the DVD-R. 2xtuners means you can record and watch something else at the same time.
