Pulp Fiction

LA Confidential

Sin City

Toy Story

******

League of Gentlemen Collection

Shawshank Redemption

- are a few of my favourites. If you can't quote loads of it after one hearing, it's not worth owning.

Band of Brothers R1 DTS (6 discs)
LOTR Trilogy Platinum Extended Editions
Alien Quadrilogy
Ultimate Matrix Box Set (10 discs)
Sin City Recut, Extended, Unrated R1 DTS
Master & Commander R1 Extended DTS
Jurassic Park R2 Japan Superbit DTS
The Haunting R1 DTS

If you must include Casino Royale it has to be the R3 Korean DTS version, with the torture scene unedited and the sound unmolested during the bathroom killing.

Surely a decent film doesn't depend upon the quality of its rendering onto disc? If it's worth having, then its quality would transcend the quality of its medium. Just a thought.

PS, I can't wait for Eldorado to come out on R2 Japan Superbit DTS.

A big screen TV and kicking AV set-up steers you more towards the action popcorn movie for shallow thrills. I can enjoy bombs and explosions 'til the cows come home, but I am quite prepared to watch deeper meaningful stuff as and when it's shown rather than spend hard earned owning it. The PQ and audio becomes much more important when the equipment highlights how good or bad it can be, a bit like not putting 30 quid remoulds on your Ferrari.

Each to their own though. If you're watching in mono on a 20" Matsui then you won't get much benefit from the DTS ES 7.1 Matrix audio channel and your attention will naturally focus on other elements of the work.

So you buy DVDs to 'appreciate' your technology, then. OK, it's a good job no-one was asking for recommendations of DVDs with any artistic merit. It reminds me of TelBoy with his 60 grand(?) stereo system, listening to Phil Collins and imagining that his rhodium mains fuse makes one iota of difference.

Please don't generalise me. I have some equipment, but it is by no means expensive, just well chosen to do the job I want. Discounting the TV there's less than 1k's worth. To enjoy it at its best sometimes it pays to source the media from further afield. The UK market tends to get the bargain basement bare essentials version when it comes to movies, and by sourcing them from elsewhere my listening and viewing pleasure can be increased, and quite bizarely, they are often cheaper too.

Everyone appreciates different things, or sometimes the same things for different reasons. Why jump all over them because you don't personally agree ? I understand you are a musician, and if so, why do some guitar players need a Taylor, Wilson, Gibson or Les Paul (or whatever they are) when they could play the same chords on an Argos guitar ?

I listed movies I enjoy and they tend to be vapid, shallow action films which benefit from exagerated special effects to make them superficially impressive, but they are fun and that's what I like sometimes. I also like Shawshank, Schindlers and a host of deeper films, but they don't jump out at me when I just want to switch off my brain on an evening and relax so I don't tend to buy as many titles like that although I do enjoy them when I choose to view them.

Pulp Fiction
The Usual Suspects
Memento
La vita e bella
Shawshank
Cidade de Deus
Seven
The sixth sense
Cars (because my little boy loves it)
Crash

I'd add Sin City and Once Upon a Time in the West (for the soundtrack alone) if the top dozen were being sought I have a cracking home theatre system and quality widescreen tv at home and it helps to bring a near cinema experience to the living room.

UB, Curious that you choose Green Mile over Shawshank and when you say "All" for Terminator, you do know there was a 3rd Personally I prefer BoB over SPR too. Jaws waiting to see what the 30th anniv release is like before I replace my old VHS copy. Same with Bladerunner, new version due with a decent 5.1 mix later this year.

I just decided that Green Mile is a lot better on balance of two brilliant but similar genre 'films. So I left Shawshank out.

Yes, of ocurse I'm aware of T3, and I loved it as much as the others. Waiting for T4 now....

Band Of Bros was a TV series IIRC? So not elligable here? If so I'd like to include the brilliant 'Taken' TV series in my top ten.

Jaws - the only one is the original. That's why it makes the list.

Personally, I don't know. My main guitar is a Squier Strat from 1982 and the other one is an Antoria neck with a homemade body. There is an upper limit beyond which further spending makes ****-all difference. I think the mathematical term is the "asymptote". I think it's sad to watch crap films simply because they have lots of frills that show off the technology to best effect.

I think the Luddites had the right idea, sometimes.

Pah! - be honest You would chop that old board in for a proper vintage Les Paul tomorrow if you could justify it.
