National Lampoon's Animal House - John Belushi
LA Confidential - Cassic Film Noir, and Russell Crowe's finest performance to date
Star Wars - The Original is the best
Lawrence of Arabia - Celluloid storytelling par excellence
Le Mans - The best motor racing film
The Thomas Crown Affair (Pierce Brosnan version) - Rene Russo
Dogma - Life of Brian for the 90's
Sin City - A masterclass in translating a comic book from page to screen
Dr No - There is only one Bond
The Long Good Friday - Still the best British gangster movie
Blimey, that took some doing! I almost considered creating a new ID just to cover the ones I left out: Casablanca, The Magnificent Seven, Yojimbo, The Jungle Book (Disney), Gone With The Wind, Pulp Fiction, etc, etc

Seems like two schools of thought here; favorite films, and best film for showing off ability of DVD format. The first is purely personnal, for the second my top few would be (in no particular order)
Toy Story (in fact any Pixar film!)
Gladiator
Saving private Ryan
Matrix
Star Wars (remastered original)
Twister
...... I should think '300' will be a spectacular DVD release as well for picture and sound.

Prefer the animation way more than the movie.
Alien
Aliens
Predator
Dune (Watch it a few times and read the book half a dozen times and you'll be close to know what the heck is going on)
Blade Runner (I prefer the original rather than the directors cut - always have)
The Thing
Saw
Full Metal Jacket
Taxi (proper french one)
Battle Royale
Some my favorites, others just worth having.

FWIW the best guitar I've ever played was a Fender Japan (no, not Squire!!) HM strat. Gave up trying to find one and got an American Deluxe instead

Hmm... a Vintage Les Paul... perfect for that classic single-coil twang.
My Strat is also the best guitar I've ever played - which is why I've never felt the need to buy another. The early Squiers (JV and SQ series) are some of the best instruments Fender ever made.

A few foreign films, if you like that sort of thing:
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance
Oldboy
Lady Vengeance
Korean classics, especially Oldboy.
Arahan is an excellent Korean martial arts comedy. No, really.
Kung Fu Hustle, brilliant modern Hong Kong style.
The Killer, John Woo and Chow Yun Fat do the best ever HK gun flick.
Battle Royale but avoid the sequel.
Infernal Affairs.. the film Scorsese remade to get his Oscar. Close call which is better.
City of God just brilliant.
La Haine... the French do riots.
And Volver makes eleven.
