Question

My wife and I are looking for a new second car, something reasonably sized with good performance.

I've read some good reviews about the Honda Accord Type R. Any advice on this car/anyone with experience of it?

Also in terms of performance, according to the figures its not too far behing a standard UK Impreza....anyone with experience of both?

Only had a 10-mile test drive in one, but the overall impression was: fast, but you've got to try hard. It only goes when you rev it ... I'm afraid I've been spoilt by having a turbo car for too long!

911 Boy....

They are fantastic motors!! Only one bad thing about them is the driving seat... too high and not adjustable

I spent 20 mins hammering the hell out of one at the Bedford Autodrome and they are quick, comfortable and handle awesomely!!

I was pleasently suprised.... I could do things in that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing in my Scoob... I was out doing the Integra's on the track and they are impressive too.

I have driven a fair amount of cars from Renault 5's too 911's and this for what it is, is Superb!

Still prefer my RB5 though!! Good car... if you're not buying a Scoob or M5 then go for it...

By the way I don't have anything to do with Honda at all, just impressed!

Hi
Well I had a Honda Accord type R (Pirates Black colour) for 2 years. It was great fun to drive & reliable. The power delivery of the V-Tec engine is something else and handled really well. The car drives like a normal 2ltr family car below 4000 revs yet when you put your foot down and then go above that magic 5000 revs weh-hey a rocket ship.
The only reason I sold mine was I wanted a scooby sooooo BAD...
I would recommend one, I wish I could have afforded both...

All the Best
Pete

Thanks for the info guys. I guess we'll have to check it out with a test drive. Its got to be fairly quick but not enough to harrass my 911

I've got an Accord R - agree with the seat thing, slightly too high, but fine if you're around six feet.
Fuel consumption much better than a scoob - it has 2 settings 30ish mpg and 10mpg - up to you which one to use.
It's slower than the old model scoob, but quicker than the new model. Front tires last about 10/12,000 no matter how u drive.
Excellent traction for a FWD, hardly any wheelspin cos it's got a LSD. Great lateral grip too - didn't it beat the current 911 at that in a Driven test?
Good finish - excellent dealers and warranty. Gearbox a tad notchy unless you're giving it some. Aircon is a £1000 option so make sure it's got that.
Power kicks in at 110mph in top which leaves everything (within reason) behind.
Mines for sale - location Edinburgh - mail me...

as father jack says, if you take it steady i used to get very low 30's. however, when pressing on the constant high revs (try to keep it in the high valve lift) means very poor mpg.

have you seen a cut-away of the VTEC system - oh so simple - have heard that honda have never had a warranty claim on the VTEC side of things (may be urban myth tho).

oh and all your mates will call it a wheelbarrow because of the two pipes

Wink

My Front Tyres only lasted 8000 miles so be warned. It does wheel spin from stand still when giving it plenty as do all FWD's
Fuel consumption is better than scooby. Ask my wallet.
Faster than MY01 NO
Faster than anything acelarating over 110 NO, But is Quick
I think all that was a bit of a sales pitch.
As I said before I loved mine but wanted a scooby even more.

All the Best

**** I must drive like a girl - no wheelspin, 10,000 from fronts and 30+ mpg ... buy my one - it's been well looked after

It does leave comparably powered cars at a decent speed tho. eg 406 3.0 328/330 cos it revs so high. 210bhp at 8000 revs is worth more than 210bhp at 5,500 - it's just getting there thats a bit of a bugger.

Doh! Never mind - I was in Dublin anyway - ah the jet set lifestyle

No hurry, I'm not going to try selling it by normal means over Christmas anyway, just noising up people on BBS's.

Cheers

Thumbs down

Gave mine back after a month - `pinking` / piston slap / engine noise ??? - problem with correct fuel the dealer said.....not so I said (and so did a foreman at another dealer !) Was also told - they all do that; especially the early ones after which the pistons were modified.

Dealer was superb; offered to replace it but I had lost faith by then but took an Integra R - fantastic machine, even as a daily driver and long distance tourer.

Would say the Subaru is an allround quicker car but the Accord`s balance and the required concentrated driving technique make it more rewarding. I felt safer driving it hard than I did / do with Imprezas.

Advice - go for the Integra if space is not at a premium.

Cheers

PS only the Integra has an LSD I believe ?
PPS latest EVO buyers guide is for the Integra R

jamesa - I went the other way from an Integra to the Accord! I found I could drive the Accord faster without trying as hard, plus it's a hell of a lot comfier and quieter. I could only stand 3 months of Integra ownership, still a bloody great car though. If I had space for 2 cars I'd still have it no.5019 it was ....awwwww.
btw, they both have LSD's the new Civic R doesn't.

Hi father,

Is that some sort of thing to stop the front wheels spinning ?

Yes and no - it's not like electronic traction control - it's mechanical and lets the inside wheel slip a bit to aid traction in cornering. These things (and Integras) dont need traction control cos the LSD (limited slip diff) does more than enough.
