A massive task.

They must have been mad to even consider it.

Was a fantastic house in the end, despite still needing rooms finishing.

I reckon closer to the 2.5 mill depending on what ground they have, looked like a farm built very close to them as well.

Agreed - fantastic. I have to say, though, the bloke was VERY smug when they were discussing the costs of the project at the end. He's spent £750k total including the purchase price, on a build that is worth at LEAST 3 million, going on the value of a couple of properties I've w*rked on recently.

hats off to them but they ended up mortgaged to the hilt.whats the point, you have a nice house/castle but you are so in debt is it worth it?
i personally couldn't go into a project like that with a set budget,i'd always feel that i had comprimised on certain things which would always bug me.
for me to do it i'd want at least 3m in the bank

Thumbs up

Most ambitious one ever IMO – and I've watched them all.

Clearly, that project merited a 90 minute programme instead of the usual 60. And, don't forget the bonus prog on More 4 now.

English Heritage seemed a pain in the ****, and to have an archeologist pawing over your every move would be very annoying, at least all she found was some 1950's crockery, which does beg the question, why is it when you dig the garden, wherever you are you are guaranteed to find some bits of white and blue plate ?

Fantastic Result though, 750k for that is fantastic, they put a lot of work in themselves so they deserve a good profit, thats a lot of house for that kind of money, nowadays 750k is standard executive new build territory.

Superb TV for once I too take my hat off to them both, lets face it at one time it could have crumbled around their ears: Got to be worth 2.5 to 3 million I would say.

A fantastic project, the vision from start to finish was amazing.
Yes they did go through the sticky patch financially, but as the owner said at the end total build cost of £750k, and is business was doing ‘very well’ so I don’t think they would be under any particular financial constraints going forward.

Would have thought value once fully complete would be ~£2m, very very nice, I admire the owners ability to realise the dream

What about the CEO at Heritage ??? what a w@nker ! ‘oh we do have money but not to throw at people who start these projects’.
Have I missed something ? Someone has the vision and desire to stop a 600 year old ruin turning into a pile of stones and they don’t offer the slightest assistance!
In fact having to spend £20k on some tree hugger poking about in a trench with a trowel is beyond belief !

And the on site heritage dude with the bad facial hair and safari suit, when the spinal wall fell down, ‘ we will have to have an offsite meeting about this ‘ I bet you will. Don’t believe he was particularly happy with the roof, think someone above him made that decision.

And the stonemasons

Complete and utter respect to a couple who started out on what IMO to most would have been a project too far

By far the best Grand Designs I've ever seen

I also think that English Heritage should have been the ones paying for the tree hugger's work!!

Just up the road from me, been waiting ages to see this one. Not watched it yet, going to sit down with a beer tonight and watch. Not sure on it's value as Hellifield is one the cheapest village's around here to buy property compared to the rest of the dales.

Brillian TV. Hadn't realised it was on for an hour and a half, kept thinking we were never going to see it even remotely finished.
Kudos to them for getting as much as they had done for only £750k. Total respect to them.
The way EH behaved was disgusting though. They obviously mislead them at the start when they bought the castle as the poor couple hadn't an inkling of the red tape and slow pace EH work at.
I've been to an EH office, was auditing the internals, opened up a store room door to find one of them asleep with feet up on the desk....

Do the people that take part in these programmes get paid to do so?

Theiving bunch English Heritage. What's the point of their existance if they sit by and watch these buildings fall down. Only to swoop down on the people who come along and want to tastefully repair and restore them. All that money which could have been poured into the restoration instead of Heritage's pockets.

A pat on the back to the guy with vision and tenacity. He and the stonemasons did a damn good job. A place to be proud of and which will be there for years to come.

Agree with all the above, best Grand Design by far.

Total respect for the couple taking on that kind of project. £750K ? What a bargain.

That Marble flooring in the Entrance and staircase. Fantastic.

Just hope they don't have to scrimp on their kids due to lack of cash.

Those Stonemasons were worth their weight in Gold.

Do you reckon I could get my new garden cabin on there ?

Worth a Spoof on Youtube perhaps ?

I get really hacked off with crap telly and something like that occasionally keep me paying the licence, thats what telly is about, to inform and inspire not to broadcast misery like Eastenders.

I also love all the building things on Discovery.

Actually, I back EH. They are there to prevent unsympathetic development (or even demolition) of important historic buildings. The clue is in their name. It's the heritage of England that they are trying to protect. While they may not be the slickest operation I do believe their purpose is a good one.

They can't let anyone do just as they want to an ancient historical monument, just because the alternative is to let it fall down. They have to ensure that if it's being changed (be that conserved, repaired or restored) it's done in such a away that it's both in keeping with the original building and obvious which parts are new vs old. I don't think they were swooping down on the owners. More a case of ensuring the rules were followed.

Respect to the couple who did this. When I saw the building I didn't think there was a hope in hell of getting it done.

The EH CEO came across as the worst sort of smug arrogant government beauracrat that we're riddled with these days.

BUT at the end they clearly did allow the couple to create something extraordinary. It is surprising they let them do the roof - which was stunning.

Hats off to the couple - and to the masons. Extraordinary craftsmanship and dedication.
