Suzuki Swift 1.0 GLS then.
Just bought one for the wife - I am amazed at it ..... it's great to drive and does 50mpg without trying!
The one we got was a 52 Reg. with 22,000miles and one owner, excellent condition all for £1300!! Quite staggering value for money!! Electric windows, mirrors, CD Player, fantastic Sports Seats ....... it really is the hidden secret of the used car market! It even came with 11 months MOT and 11 months Tax!!

I've got a Merc 300E 24v sportline in my collection.
£400 with 110k, FSH, all the toys and 231bhp.
The 20mpg is a downside, but it takes lots of abuse really well.

Sub 1k, Id look at mainstream saloons like Vectras and Mondeos. There are sooo many to choose from its unreal. Parts are cheap and easy to get hold of. Scrapyards are full of them for larger or more expensive things.
I Bought a Mondeo to run about in last week for £150. 1995, Mot`d, clean condition, runs well and will keep running till the mot expires when I can sell it on and probably get my money back. As a minimum I could even weigh it in for scrap and get £40 or so. It "kangaroo`d" a bit under load when I got it, but a good thrash has cleared it out and it runs fine. Evidence suggests the last owner was an old person so it had probably never been above 3k rpm.
Before that I have had several Cavaliers, all for £100 and all done a years duty with no problems, and my expensive buy was a 1998 406 estate, which was a hefty £600. But it did come with full mot, tax and full service history. Ran for a year without spending a thing apart from a pair of tyres then sold it for £1000.
Motoring cant really get any cheaper.

Tuesday night I picked up a 1999 VW Passat 1.8 20v Turbo with 134k miles on the clock but full service history in top condition inside and out for £900. Cant go wrong. It drives fantastic. Ive been in brand new cars that dont feel as nice as this. Full years tax and MOT on it too
OK OK its green but for the price I was willing to let that slide
