Default petrol generator

Can anybody recommend a cheapish petrol generator

Needs to be;
1. Reasonably quiet
2. Enough power for a MIG
3. Not the size of Sellafield
4. Not mega bucks

i think you will struggle to find a small cheap quite one that will run a mig welder, i tried it a few years back with one that was the size of sellafield and it just about managed.

Electric welders generally need a high power so you will struggle to find a cheap petrol genny for the job.

I've hired diesel powered welders in the past when working in areas without mains power.

Avoid a petrol set, red diesel is by far cheaper for fuel, more reliable, more grunt, and you won't end up looking like Simon Weston when you spill fuel on a red hot exhaust manifold

Diesels seem too expensive, not found one for less than £300 when you can pick up a small petrol one for around £40

40 quid?

Are you familiar with the term, 'you get what you pay for' ?

A Fiat chinquechento costs about 6K new, an M5 costs about 60. Are you expecting 5KW of reliable power for the price of a night out at the local?

ps...you will need a ***** of a generator to power any kind of MIG set worth using, small scale generated electrical power does not generally get on with AC powered welding plant....do not just look at power consumption of a welding set Vs power output of a generator, it doesn't quite work like that. MFR's fluff figures..

Which is why my second post on this thread was I may have to skip the MIG. I made the mistake of thinking a small generator would power a MIG

I want some lighting and power for a lock-up, I don't need to 5KW. I'm not planning on using it for more than 100 hours and therefore I'll look past the M5 till al-Qaeda drop a nuclear bomb, then I be in the market for a 5KW diesel generator
