Default GPS (garmin type etc) experts (or good bull****ers !)

What I want to achieve is a display using a 5 inch screen etc and something like a garmin VN52 GPS module . I want the full Uk /euro street map stuff with postcodes etc . BUT also off road stuff using Garmin maps etc. so If I am off road in wales I can use a O/S map and plot my way.

is this possible??? dont mind buying new kit. But like th eidea of a bigger screen than on the current devices etc

cheers

There is this one :

Garmin: StreetPilot 7500

But I think you might need to do some sort of touch screen mini-PC job to get what you want.

Thought offroading had been banned in Wales anyway?

You can run TomTom software on a car PC using Microsofts PocketPC 2003 emulator, along with a touch-screen display and a USB GPS receiver.

Good question?? I have master keys for the Forestry commision and Water board so this allows me access to some great "Green roads" ok , Not full off road! but some excellent tracks and stuff.

I took a look at a 7500 yesterday. looks fine etc but cannot run seperate O/S type maps. so once off the normal roads etc you cant work out where you are !

The garmin unit (VN52) is ideal as it should???????? allow this function. Have sent garmin a email for a answer.

I have TomTom5 for navigation and MemoryMap for OS Maps both on my PDA.

GPS Bluetooth dongle - but plenty have it built in.

Having exact GPS psoition& Track shown on a 1:25K is great

How about the Garmin aviation series? I'm sure there is one that does road navigation and then has terrain maps.

Garmin: GPSMAP 496

What he said ^^^^^

Have TomTom and Memory Map installed on my HP iPAQ 2210 Pocket PC along with a Fortuna Bluetooth GPS. Have all OS LandRanger (1:50 000) for the UK along with several Explorer (1:25 000) maps of national parks, bits of Scotland etc. (Not all on the PDA though, you'd need a huge memory card ). MemoryMap is fantastic for all outdoor activities as well as planning B road blasts and recording them so you can see how fast you went after

The Pocket PC is fairly robust and you can get various waterproof cases for them, Otter Boxes being the best but quite pricey.
