Default Do you have to carry your passport in any Countries?

when visiting another country outside europe etc. Is it required that you must have your passport on you to prove who you are and to show your status in the country (tourist, student etc )

And are the Police allowed to demand to see it?

Most European countries require some form of ID, which for foreigners effectively means a passport.

In the US you are expected to have photo ID - so for us this means passport.

AFAIK both Holland and Switzerland will expect you to be carrying photo ID. As a tourist, I expect it won't be a biggie if you don't.

In Thailand you are supposed to, but nobody ever does. Most of the long term farangs have a Thai driving licence instead. Getting mine next week

Rannoch, I though a UK driving licence was acceptable in the US

It is not a requirement to carry id with you in the US.
For such circumstances where you do need to show it, a photo licence will suffice, although I had great fun with my old paper one for a while

You are supposed to carry ID in many countries, although I have never been required to actually produce it (apart from in the US when buying alcohol).

Definitely the law in FSU (Russia, Ukraine etc). Police tend to check this in these places quite a lot, especially late at night.

Went on a cruise in the summer. Was issued with a photo ID card for the ship which we used to scan off and onto the ship.
We were told in Sicilly, Italy, Spain and France, to leave our passports in the cabin safes...
So certainly in mainland Europe, passports do not need to be carried abooot the person
There may be some new law that means boat id's are sufficient as you dont get one without showing your passport when originally boarding

Make a fake one up - most of the customs folk wouldn't spot a real passport never mind the dozy police ******* .

As everyone else has stated - most countries require people to carry some form of photo id with them - I never carry my passport anywhere except when I'm actually travelling.

Never been asked to identify myself by anyone - but since the photo driving licence I have carried that pretty much everywhere.
