Default Lake District - recommended places to stay?

Preferably somewhere that isn't a family-biased facility, just somewhere decent.

cheers

Tel,

Depending on what you're after, myself and the missus stayed here romantic hotels in windermere, hotel, lake district hotels - applegarth hotel & jr's restaurant - weekend breaks in windermere, hotels, lake windermere, luxury, romantic breaks, english lakes hotel for a few days late last year and found it a good all round hotel.

Central to Windermere so there are good local restaurants (the hotel one is good also) and the lake / steamers are within walking distance

Andy

EDITED TO ADD: Good size car park out of site for the scoob

The Drunken Duck Inn and Restaurant - Ambleside, The Lake District, Cumbria, UK

I think this place will suit you, I found it more than adequate.

Used to do some business in Kendal years ago (20+)

Hotels Kendal, Garden House Hotels Kendal, Lake District, Cumbria UK

This place was always very friendly - And I still remember it - must have been good.

Prices seem quite reasonable too.

Let us know where you stayed if you visit any of these places and what your impressions were. I'm always on the look out for decent hotels/pubs/restaurants there.

Stayed here Welcome to Skelwith Bridge Hotel in the Lake District National Park for a long weekend in December. Great hotel, good food and fine wines. Had an excellent time despite the weather.

IMO Keswick is by far the best place to stay if you are going to the Lake District, we usually go for a Victorian house in the town for a week, there's loads to choose from.

Dog & Gun is a great pub too.

Agreed for singles / couples, but for families I'd stick to Windermere Ambleside and Bowness. Windermere is between the other 2, so ideal.
Then your close to the lake, and cruises, there 3 fairly big shopping areas to go to, and cinema in Ambleside for when it rains.

Try the Apple Pie shop in Ambleside (had tea there yesterday - only a 5 hour round trip...).

When it rains you should be here

Otherwise what's the point of going?

Personally I find all the major towns pretty appalling. Full of coach party types, annoying families and even worse than that the odd 'septic tank'.
