I spent a couple of weeks there on business some years ago. I suppose the traffic and driving stye is the first thing that strikes you! Just don't leave your elbow out of the window or you'll lose it. I thought is was absolutely fascinating place. I stayed in a fantastic old hotel like a palace - it just wouldn't exist in UK because it would all get vandalised. And, of course, there is a lot to take in as a tourist. I was told to avoid the hot season as it is REALLY hot and stinks because of the dodgy sewerage system. Work stops after lunch for a zizz and starts again about 4.
I guess if I had a long term assignment I would want to ensure accommodation was decent ex-pat standard and you had a car and driver - at least to start with. Not sure about attitude to Brits now following Iraq. Food was great, women were ugly dl

I do a lot of business in Cairo and it is very fascinating.
It is easily liveable for an expst ( I have 2 guys there now). Most expats try to live in Maadi area. Get a driver as I would hate to drive there myself.
Everything is available in shops and it is relatively safe as very high security at all places frequented by westerners.
