i think the point being made here is he deposited 100.00 yet his reciept stated he had deposited 500.00

i think you might have a good chance of getting the 500.00 against the actual 100.00 you have put into your bank as the recipet states 500.00

Was it cash or a cheque?

If it was a cheque they'll defo figure it out as the debit clearing will not balance and the cheque details will lead them straight back to you.

If it was cash the branch;s accounts will not balance at the end of the day but there is a good chance that they will not have a clue who has profited from the mistake. They may get all the pay in slips and compare the transactions but then again .....

Is the receipt printed? Don't forget the cashiers till would show £400 over but the money would be £400 light if it is. If you go & complain you might get the cash but the cashier would more than likely be investigated by the banks fraud department and could be accused of theft. Would you want this to happen if it were you.

BTW, putting it on a forum has showed what you are considering.

Wouldn't worry about fraud or theft charges or interpol turning up at your door.

These things happen all the time and the bank will have an acceptable limit when it comes to cash differences. The teller will also have been part of a cash pool, unless they had a history of making errors and have to be seperated, so in all likelyhood the difference could have come from any teller that was on. Also some branches do not balance every day so they could be looking through 2 or 3 days woth of transactions to find their mistake.

If they have a good track record they may not even bother to look for it and simply right it off as it'd cost more than £400 to track it down.
