Those White camera like things on motorway bridges
What are they? The look like small cameras pointing downwards on many bridges/gantries etc.
I believe they may be 'counters', i.e. everytime something runs under them it adds to a counter for traffic level monitoring etc.
Anyone confirm?

Its trafficmaster isn't it, same as the blue ones at the side of A roads. Used to have one that I got from the RAC years ago. It monitors the traffic and lets you know if there are any holdups ahead.

They are ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras, and unlike TrafficMaster, they record your entire number plate.
They were installed on main roads/motorways so that in the event of an "incident", the police could spot, say, a getaway vehicle trying to escape. Thus they were originally supposed to be turned off for most of the time.
Funny how they always seem to be on these days ('cos they send laser detectors mental)
