Default Best story of all-time?

In the last few days I've watched most of the 6 Star Wars films and I've seen all of them within the last few months. At the end of Return of the Jedi I couldn't help but think that the Star Wars story is, as far as I am concerned, the best story ever. The core theme (good vs evil) is nothing special but the way it is told accross several generations and the setting (i.e. a galaxy far away, etc) really captures the mind IMHO.

What do you guys think is the best story of all time (doesn't necessarily have to be a movie).

Star Wars gets my vote

Starwars, Lord of the rings, Terminator,

Ooooh forgot about LOTR - another excellent story. Probably my 2nd place but I like a more tangable form of fantasy. The aliens in star wars are more realistic than angry talking trees

I've always been a big fan of the Matrix but my problem with that is there were too many unanswered questions at the end. LOTR and Star Wars tie things up nicely but Matrix leaves you working too hard trying to figure out what happens (if anything) next.

Not really. The Hobbit was first published in 1937, with the LOTR books following by 1954. As for Star Wars crossing generations, if you read the supplimentary material relative to LOTR then the story crosses not just generations, but civilizations and millennia.

Star Wars gets my vote

All the best stories have the 'good V evil' theme. What is brilliant about Star Wars is that it tells the story of redemption. How could something so utterly vile and horrific as Anakin/Vader be redeemed? But he gets there in the end. Same overarching theme is found in Susan Howatch's Starbridge books, only Howatch is brilliant at characterisation and a much better storyteller than Lucas. IMHO of course!

Kenny, Kenny how could you forget about LOTR ?

Seriously, I do prefer both the Matrix and LOTR to Robocop !!
The point is that each creates their own world ie true fantasy.

The Bible.

Biggest fantasy ever created;
good story, though, albeit factually inaccurate in a number of areas.

Great piece of fiction literature.

And if you are looking for the daddy of them all, again I bring up the bible.

Star Wars here too

On a different note, LOTR was fantastic too, but totally different so could not be compared with Star Wars

I think you'll find it was not the films but your right hand that was doing the gripping
