Bizzare this one, during winter months when the toilet is flushed the pipes make a kind of farting noise (before anyone says it, its not an echo )they kinda vibrate, its quite loud and seems to not be so bad if the cold water tap is put on a few seconds before the flush.
Lasts about 2-5 seconds
Any tips how to stop this would be great!
Thanks
John

Not a plumber, but I'll be an inginear when I learn to spell.
Try reducing the mains pressure by closing your stop-****/ isolation valve a bit, then flush. If this works, you may find that the float is too high in the cistern, the fartin' is likely to be vibration starting at the float valve as it opens to re-fill. Alternatively, it could be a dickie washer in the float..

Is the noise coming from the incoming feed when the cistern is filling up?
If so it could be because of wind (i.e. the weather sort, not the sort associated with curry) blowing into the system and causing the water to ripple in the cistern. This makes the ball valve bob up and down a bit, and instead of cleanly shutting off the water when it gets near the top, it bounces on and off a few times, causing the knocking.
The fix is quite simple - take a plastic cup and using a bit of wire, attach it to the arm of the ball valve. Dip the cup in the water so that it is full to the same level as the water in the full cistern. This stabilises the arm and stops the knocking.
Got this from the Readers Digest DIY book, and it worked a treat for me.
Hope this helps.

You sure you're not bending over when you get this farting noise? (sorry, couldn't resist, your post has given me one of those great I've gone crazy with the giggles moments)

remove cistern lid .flush toilet, now lift the ball tap up so it stops water.Any noise now?if there is no sound let the ball tap down and let it fill up the cistern, you might hear the noise when the ball tap is neally at the top, lift it up again to stop the noise.call yourself a plumber or fit a new ball tap washer on the toilet.
If the noise still appears find your main stop tap, open or close it slightly, and try again.
some stop taps (the older sort)have a loose jumper inside witch causes water hammer or banging when a tap etc is switched off quickly.if the noise comes from this ,youll need a fixed jumper stop tap(you can change just the top).you will have to switch off the water out side your boundary to sort this.
