Default is p&p VATable

i've just placed an internet order wich is delivered via royal snail

the site quotes a p&p price but this is then added to the ordered items before VAT is calculated

is this right? is this usual?

cheers

don't think so. Normally it should be net cost plus VAT then you add £9.99 P&P on that cost (if that makes sense)

There is no VAT on the actual postage cost, the rest is packing cost which should be subject to VAT

NI makes no diffrence.

Northern Ireland is part of Britian so it should make no difference

post office dont charge VAT as stamps etc are not vatable (royal mail used to belog to government so what was the point?) even though they have a VAT number on the reciept to be used when they sell other products such as stationary that are vatable.

When a VAT registered company sells something it has to charge VAT on the total amount (except for books and certain types of fuel).

Got it?

A VAT registered company should charge VAT on p/p but the company will no be able to claim any VAT back on the stamps.

Edit to add: but I am not certain if this applies if the goods themselves are VAT exempt.

I think that the question relates to Royal Mail (stamp) charges, rather than carrier's charges...

VAT is to be charged on postage even if it is zero rated goods being sent,VAT is charged on the service, that is why a lot of companies use couriers so that they can reclaim the VAT.

WRONG!

Please contact your local VAT office before talking twaddle that could get other people in trouble.

Not sure you understand how VAT works with business??

I know these rules inside out!
