MiniDisc Techie Question

I've got a MD Hifi and would like to record mp3s from my PC straight to MD. My hifi has an optical input so thats no problem.
Does my sound card need to have an optical out?
What type of cable would i need inorder for it to be cd quality?
Cheers guys,
Kos

I didn't think it was possible to play MP3 off a minidisc? I thought it used some other compression method (ATRAC or something?). Be happy to be proved wrong, though. What are you going to use to play it?

Just found this site... http://www.t-station.net/md_record_mp3.html
Only glanced at it, though, but seems to have useful stuff. The first thing I looked at was only talking about recording analogue from your PC, so haven't yet determined if it's possible to do it digitally...
Now, does anyone know if you can backup your hard drive onto MD???

You need a S/PDIF (Sony Philips Digital Interface) to Optical converter. They aren't that cheap either coz you're converting a Semi-Professional digital format into optical (light pipe).....
Is it a SoundBlaster card?

Cheap and easy way:
Get a 3.5mm jack to 2 phono lead.
Plug the jack into the output from your soundcard on the pc, the phono into your minidisc / hifi.
Press record on the md, and play on the pc.

But that is analogue. I guess we can all record analogue easier but it would be good to do it digitally and avoid any losses in the D to A then A to D process.
Cant say I've seen a sound card with a digital out on it though (either coax or optical) ?

there are quite a few external converters around that connect via USB to a pc/mac and output digital signal direct to minidsic or other digital recorder - xitel are the best known - available widely in the uk.

I think Sony actually do a mini-disc drive in 3.5" format. I'm sure that would do the trick !
Actually I'm wrong - it can only write data discs.
