I know of someone who worked here in investment banking.
You'd never know it talk to him, but you might have a clue when you see some of his cars.

Yeah it's true. What you have to remember is that there are plenty of 'normal people' on 'normal wages'. The figures are skewed by the way the bank is structured around the partners and senior management - who can earn huge bonuses. If that is what you want then fine.
I know someone on their graduate recruitment programme. He went through about a dozen interviews, just to get in. He knows he has effectively given up the next four or five years of his life to establish himself there (the level of committment demanded frightens most people off). After that he probably has another ten years max to make it to partner. If he does that, then he's made for life. That said, as Pete says - they don't give the bonuses for nothing - it is results driven. If you don't make it you're out.
Mind you, even the cast offs from GS tend to be very highly sort after and normally walk into very nice jobs!

don't worry. most people i know who left university to move into consultancy were chinless wonders. those who had any personality quickly left to find something they actually enjoyed.

if you know anything about invesment finance and management, you could earn a packet too
a senior front office c# developer will be be £65-75K as a guage. the same c# developer with no front office knowledge would be on £40-45K elsewhere.

Very few at GS are on less than 100k basic. It's a different world to what most people are used to, even within investment banking. If you buy into the culture, it's a fabulous place to work.

All of my friends in the city get a whopping bonus.
A very good friend at Ernst & Young got a not insignificant 6 figure one..... but then looking at what hours he works I am not surprised.

Great if you like the lifestyle, but a friend of mine was a trader in NY for 13 years, now in London as a strategist, and the it's so competitive you don't have a life. (In the office by 6:30, back home at 10pm etc)
For the hours I actually work in the IT industry I reckon I'm on about £500k :-)

I wouldn't, you can earn more than them in basic salary in IT if you are good enough - you just miss out the bonuses.
The fact is if you want to do it you are owned by the companies while you work for them. Plus they generally seem to be a humourless lot anyway. Far too serious for me.

So sticking your finger out in the boardroom whilst saying 'pull my finger' and farting would not go down too well i take it?
