Fifth Gear last night [11/12/06]
Has it reached rock bottom
I know not everyone is a fan of the new series, and I am aware that some people even wrote a letter complaining about the show’s all new style.
I decided the best way to watch it, is record it on Sky+ then watch it skipping through the crap acting, shocking car park antics and stick to the half decent reports. Usually I could only extract about 20 mins of watchable material – 10 mins of adverts and at least 30 mins of utter sh1t3.
Last night, I felt it finally hit the bottom. Tiff’s track day tips may have been useful to some people – but I felt some of the advice could get you in trouble [i.e take your car beyond it’s limits to see what will happen = black flagged no doubt!]
The oldest feature around, russ swift, a presenter and 3 bangers hand braking around a bit of tarmac. And some odd one of Vicky off roading in a Daihatsu Charade in Wales, then adding gravy and Vodka to the fuel to see what would happen ?!?! The new Honda HRV? A Chevrolet Matiz at a 0-60 meet with the challenge of beating manufacturers 0-60 stats. Can’t remember anything else, but there was no real quality features.
Shame really, as given some proper direction it could be a decent programme.

Suffered watching it until I could enter the competition for the S3 (wish he'd reviewed the car) then I switched off.
Did see the brief bit with the tuned cars, but that new presenter gets on my nerves. Ruined a feature by trying the 0-60 in that cr@p car. Thats when I turned off for good.

Haven't watched any of this series, and don't intend to
Edited to add that if you want to watch a decent car-related programme on a Monday night watch 'The Garage' on Discovery channel

Completely forgot about it again last night. After the Gadget Show finished (Suzi Perry in short skirt and boots) I went off and did something interesting*
* well, more interesting than 5th Gear

TopGear is miles better not primarily due to Mr Clarkson, but the entire team.

5th gear is by far the worst car show on....It's boring, bland and it be great to go down to the Ace and stand in the backround hurling abuse....if I was that bothered....
It's a shame though because Tiff is a real good drvier/presenter....seeing him with the top-gear boys at the MPH's was fantastic.
What a waste of tv....then again, isn't all tv a waste?

I saw the last bit of the programme, about depreciation. Top tip seemed to be to buy a luxury barge that's 18 months old rather than a new one
They took an important topic, you could devote the entire programme to it, and ballsed it up. Didn't they say at the beginning of the piece it was about how to beat depreciation? Defies belief

I won't do the bandwagon thing, I thought it was OK
Not up to Top Gear stds, but then TG goes silly with all the stunts rather than testing proper cars out.
It's better than having no car programmes on at least.

I was even more disappointed than ever last night - there is no useful information in the program, it doesnt make you laugh and it sure isnt entertaining - so what's the point - it just doesnt work.
As for Tiff's track day tips - no track/trackday organisers will allow those type of antics and as already said will black flag you.
Overall crap show, and I now find VBH one of the most irritating people on TV.

I can't watch it any more, the bits with VBH and TL really make me cringe which is a shame as I usually really like VBH and used to enjoy watching TL on Soccer AM.
I like Tiff too and I love cars so I can't understand why the programme just doen't work for me, I've tried to like it but always end up switching it off.

What ever happened to Driven? I always enjoyed that.
TBH I don't find 5th Gear that offensive. I probably enjoy Top Gear more - but then I didn't like that in its new format initially. Maybe 5th Gear will grow and improve.
