Default The State Of Christmas Decorations On Houses

Now call me an old man or killjoy or whatever but it seems to me that there has been an amazing increase in the amount of decorations that people are putting on the outside of their houses and the number of houses undertaking this "house decoration" has vastly increased too.

I, for one, see absolutely no benefit from this, derive no pleasure from it and in an age where people are concerned about global warming/carbon emissions etc find it a complete farce that millions of watts of electricity are wasted in making your house look like a fairground ride for 6 weeks of the year

What do other people think?

I think that it looks VERY tacky - Christmas is a commercial event at the best of times, and this just drags it down further.

However, I still have to drive past some of the local houses to show the kids (3 & 6) as they love it and want us to decorate our house. I will continue to disappoint them with that request until they have their own house

It's all a matter of taste

Unfortunately, its a sin not just committed by people who live in council houses.

Miserable lot!! I find it so depressing at this time of the year. Dark, wet and cold and so I think a few lights (in moderation) brighten the place up a bit. Don't do it myself mind.......

the whole idea of christmas has been lost, far to commercial
the trouble with some of these houses is the decorations, ie; homer simpson in a santa outfit:
the arguement about climate ! stick it were the sun don't shine

It's not so bad if everyone doesn't go to the same B&Q, buy the same light sets and hang them all next door to each other

Angry

Surely under the new PART P regulations, the installation of electrical equipment out of doors or in a garden requires a four grand training course and a five hundred quid exam for certification.

Maybe the government should send out it's snoops (the ones that will be assessing and photographing your house for your inflated council tax) to detect and prosecute such law breakers!!!

...or maybe they will choose selective enforcement and only nick the middle class wages earners rather than the benefit spongers on council estates who seem to have the money to put up such tacky displays

I 100% support people having OTT exterior xmas lighting.

It's a simple way of determining how little class, how chavvy, how immature and twattish people are without having to interract with them and finding out too late. I found this technique especially useful during the world cup, the same people covered their house/car with flags etc. as well

You either have undersated class or overstated lack of class

right-o So his real name isn't puff then?

As per my previous post, I find xmas lights serve a rather useful social indicator

I think it is miserable and curmudgeonly to run people down if they want to put some Christmas lights etc up. It brightens the place up and does no significant harm to anyone. I don't decorate the outside of my house but am quite happy to see other people's.

I think it's great and have started building my own collection.

I only have a giant inflatable snowman and 3 dicso light reindeers with motorised heads, oh and the dangle light things round the garage

My 2.5 year daughter loves it and we spend loads of time walking together round the houses looking at all the different lights.....it's CHRRRIIIIISSSSSSSTTTTTTMMAAAAAASSSSSSSS

You didn't have enough poll options

I do like it but I don't put stuff up myself - so the closest option was first one - must agree though The pic posted above is 'just a tad' OTT - I don't like to be unable to tell the diference between day and night

As for saving the planet - give us a break, how many subarus would you have to take off the road to run all the council estate outdoor lights - not many I reckon

Anyone who travels by motor vehicle is contributing to emissions - whether that has any significant effect on global warming... Well, there's been LOADS of threads 'discussing' that topic LOL

Each to their own.....

There's a house in our village which is decorated to within an inch of it's life. I'll try to get a photo to post up. However, the chap responsible has visitors from all over checking them out, its like Blackpool illuminations up there. To his credit he has a collection bucket for a charity, Children in Need last year I think.

On this sort of basis, nobody can really criticise him. He's really entering into the spirit and making a good contribution to a worthy charity.

Our area likes to think its a bit posh, so its twinkly little white lights to try and look classy, kind of works until the J4CKO's stick their garish coloured bulbs on the Rhodedendron, the neightbours go past and say 'Oh look, coloureds, their goes the neighbourhood'

The couple over the road insist on putting this godawful neon crhistmas present up, it has a flash mode and if its on that and hey forget to turn it off it lights up our bedroom every four seconds, I am going to set it free if it happens this year and replace it by nailing their f*cking yowling moggie there in its place !

Not really going to hurt that cat, hat would be obscene to nail it up there, will use no more nails.

There is a family up our way, who decorate their house. He gets hundreds of people visiting and last year raised over 8k for the local childrens hospice.
I don't mind them at all
