There is a wave off Maui called Jaws and it could be that - surfers can only ride it if they get towed in or it can be windsurfed.
Jaws is a mental wave so much power behind it and a sharp reef below that is really shallow as the wave is building behind - not one you want to fall over on

I've seen this before on something called the billabong odyssey, its a documentry about some sufer dudes that travel the world to find the biggest waves. It is real, should watch the documentry, its mental!!
