I'd want something I could put my entire collection onto, rather than a nano where you have to delete songs to make room for others!

it depends how much of your cd collection you like
I bought a 30gb one and spent ages loading 750 songs on it (10% of capacity) now i'm deleting the ones i don't like, God knows what posessed me to buy a Craig David Album and then load it on my ipod

Don't bother with an ipod and get a Creative Zen Vision M available in 30gig and 60gig variants. Read the reviews and everyone says it's better than the ipod. I've currently got 2000 audio tracks at 192kb, two 2 hour DVDs and a load of photos on mine and I've still got over 16gig spare. Another little thing which is nice sometimes is a built in FM radio. I've got the Creative and my brother has the ipod and he's jealous as hell of mine. Also you're not tied to using bespoke software to sync the creative to your PC. You can either use the software that comes with it or it works straight out of the box with Windows Media Player.

well, one would think the presence of moving parts and a bigger screen to light would be a drain, but the iPod will have a bigger battery - so I don't know.
My gf's 3rd gen ipod 20gb has a sh!te battery - must be NiMH.

They all have crap battery life. I wouldn't buy any Apple product personally.
The problem with have 100s of albums in your playlists is that you spend so much time navigating to find what you want to listen to that the battery is almost exhausted before you start lol.

There's no point saying you have 2,000 songs on your ipod and not being able to set it up on shuffle because it keeps coming up with songs you dont like!

The ipods, overall, are the best system out there. They have something like 75% of the worldwide MP3 player market and the only people that complain about them are the people who have gone and bought the other brands.
pslewis, if you don't like following sheep what operating system are you using on your PC?

I was all set to buy an ipod before I bought my Zen Vision M as I figured that was the only hard drive based player on the market. It was only when I came across a review from an ipod owner saying that they wished they'd bought the Creative player instead that I found out about it. The only downside to it that I have found is the limited number of after market accessories available but in my 4 months of ownership the number of bits available on ebay has grown considerably.

It depends on what you will be using it for (Creative v iPod that is). If you are going to use the video function, then the Creative is well worth a look - it's a cracking player and has a better display and battery life.
If you are going to be using it mainly for sounds (as I do), then there is very little in it. 30gb iPod video is about 20 quid cheaper (depending on where you buy it). Sound quality from both is very good (although they both benefit from having a half set of decent headphones (see Pete's head phone thread )).
8Gb Nano is very neat, but capacity is too small for me. iPod video is slightly smaller and lighter than the Creative unit too - if that's important (was for me as it's used most days and stays in my suit pocket)
I still think the functionality and design of the iPod are hard to beat (let's face it, everybody has basically copied them) plus my black iPod video looks nice next to my black MacBook For once, the sheep might just be right..

On a Nano? I don't know. The battery life on my iPod video is very good for sounds. Video drains it very quickly!

I couldn't find anything on a 60gig Creative Vision M so I got the 80gig video ipod. Battery is doing quite well for the amount of video time used. And for a techno muppet, I haven't really had too many problems moving music or video onto it.
edited to say there is a black Creative Zen Vision M with 60gig on amazon at £219

To be honest, having all your music on one device sounds like a good idea but the reality of searching through all the songs on an iPod is a pain.
If all you want to do is shuffle through everything you own then get the bigger iPod. If you want to be able to easily select songs that you choose, get the Nano.
I've got a 20gb iPod and to be honest, without the ability to do a text search on all those songs I end up just using one or two play lists wich I update on the PC as and when I feel like it or get new CDs and then just sync up the iPod. There's probably only a couple of hundred tracks that I listen to most of the time anyway.
It's nice to have the option of having all your music on the iPod, but the reality is that you'll probably only use 10% of it on a regular basis. Get the Nano and spend the saving on music for it I say!

I got the video to pass the time on the gym bike / cool down. One episode of Sex and the City later Also for when I go abroad for work. My laptop doesn't have a DVD drive unless I take a heavier docking base too.

I was in the same predicament 2 weeks ago. I spent about 10 lunch times at work looking into all the options, and played with some in Currys etc.. Decided on the Nano in the end for 24 hours battery life and the size of it (I want to use mine in the gym and decided the video was too big.. Nothing else has such a good user infterface as iPods.. plus it does have a text search to help, I don't find searching through 1000 tracks a problem at all to find the one I want - everything is set up in artists / albums etc.. it's simple. I think I made the right decision, mabybe the sheep are right this time... (bonus is, got a couple dirt cheap from Boots - the joys of being staff sometimes).
