The variation in costs would vary hugely depending on the house -I think you be more specific!

Thats like saying whats the running costs of a 4door saloon, but it could be a 10year old 1.8 diesel Mondeo or a brand new Audi 4.2 V8 RS4!

Council tax is obviously dependent on the value of the house, and buildings and contents insurance should be quotable from any insurer with your details.

I think the number of people living there is more important than the size of the house. My running costs wouldn't be much good to you, as I live in the US at the moment, and my electricity bill is huge with the AC running constantly for 9 months!

My advice would be to spend some time in the area where you are (I presume) looking to buy, and try and strike up a conversation with one of your perspective new neighbours!

As it's a newish house, your insulation should be good, and if you turn all your appliances off, rather than standby, you could end up getting a months free leccy a year, apparently.....

I like all the quotes for gas!!!

I posted a thread up a few days ago complaining about my gas bill yet not one of these quotes come close to my actual gas bill of £349 for a quarter!

I have a 4 bedroom house although the 2 second floor bedroom are not heated at the moment as there is only me and Sarah so its pointless so essentially we have a 2 bedroom house but our actual bill seems to be looking around £80-£100 per month

Jesus mate dont get that debate started!!!

Council Tax (Poll tax) started in about 1990 an was meant to be the only 'rates' bill you paid but it was a way of getting more tax from houses with more adults in eg. 2 adults in a house at the mo would pay (ish) £100-£120 per month yet still pay water rates....back in 1990 if you had 4 adults in your house you would have had to pay £520 x the four people regardless of whether they were working or not (then after paying you would claimback any over payments)

I was going to spout some more crap but due to a few stella Ive forgotten

Much the same as the property tax, the ISD taxes and another sizeable tax demand I got through last month in Texas which I can't remember! Plus I am paying about $700 a year to our "homeowners association" so they can drive around and complain about the odd weed on my lawns once a month!

The property tax where I am is around 3.5%, so I'm paying around $12,000 a year in property tax, plus the five or six thousand I pay in other taxes, which is more than the council tax I used to pay living in Westminster. Although Westminster has one of the lowest council tax rates in the country, mainly because so many MP's have their pied a terre's there.....

Having said that, income tax, especially in Texas, is very reasonable, and there are lots of allowances to claim back so I'm hoping for a decent cheque come rebate time in March, which will be going towards my tour of SE Asia!

Council tax covers refuse collection, street lighting, street "furniture", council gyms etc etc..... Plus prisons, the odd war in the Middle East, construction of new toll roads, backhanders to African warlords, etc etc.....

Do you have the latest spec loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, double glazing and doors?
I had all new loft insulation and cavity wall insulaton done last year and it has made a massive difference.

Cheers

There's something horribly amiss in that case, IMHO. I was in a rental place over the summer - 3/4 bed mid-terrace 3 storey townhouse. Paying an initial £30/month by DD on the gas, over the course of 5-6 months, my final account showed me getting ~£100 back. Ok it was April-September so no real use of the heating at all, but that gaves £10-12/month for hot water (shower daily plus other use) and gas hob usage.

Think I missed the other thread, but get your meter, system etc checked. There's no earthly way that you should be paying over £100/month unless you are e.g. running the heating flat out with the doors open most of the time!

P S Like lee says, insulation etc will make a big difference on the heating bills
