Going to New York, anyone been?
I'm heading across to New York for 5 nights on Friday.
Anyone been that can offer any advice or recommendations or any experiences that may prove useful?
Any "must do" or "must sees"?
Best way of getting from airport (Newark) into centre (8th Avenue)?
All advice appreciated

All the usual stuff,
Empire State Building, Top of the Rock@rockefeller center, Statue of liberty
ice skating is now on at central park and rockefeller center
The huge christmas tree will be lit on 29th November if you are still there (7-9pm)
All the sales start on Black Friday 24th, early in the morning, so you will miss the earlybird deals.
Anything in particular you want to know? Do a search on here for nyc or new york, been loads of threads. I'll send freak here too for more stuff.

So, the obvious must-see's are....
Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Central Park Zoo!
Ground Zero?
Brooklyn Bridge
Staten Island
Central Park Carriage tour
Grand Central Station
Ellis Island
Are there particular "no go" areas we should beware?
Is it advisable to get the train from Newark airport to our hotel, or would a taxi be best advised?

Back in the day Webster Hall was a place to go for a great night out with some good themed rooms including a reggae set in the basement. Don't know about now though..
Oh, and don't forget to "have a nice day"

Yeah all the above. Greeat place
If you don't fancy walking everywhere, it maybe handy if you get a week long ticket for the tourist buses, which'll take you to all the hot spots. (can't miss them, normally some old half shagged English double decker ).
If you take a yellow cab, PUT YOUR SEATBELT ON, some of these guys couldn't drive off a cliff if they tried; Cab driving is the first step on the working ladder for fresh immigrants.

The Bronx Zoo is far better than the Central Park one but you really need a day to do it. (It's one of the world's best) Does look a bit like you are in 'the 'hood" when you get off the subway but it's a safe enough walk.
For that little bit extra it can be worth pre-booking a town-car instead of a cab. $10-20 more. (From the airport)

We did the park carriage and thought it was a rip off, he rushed us round and couldnt wait to boot us out.
As mentioned above the bronx zoo is massive and needs at least half a day, it is also fine walking round there from the subway station.
Subway is easiest way to get about a 7 day unlimited use ticket was $21 and is safe too.
Top of the rock is an alternative/addition to the ESB
Get on ticketmaster.com to look for concerts and thegarden.com for basketball and hockey(both on when you are there)

I would not worry about feeling unsafe. Was walking round at 2 in the morning and felt safer than I do in Norwich to be honest. Obviously I was not in the heart of "the hood" wearing some english football shirt, so as with most things, it is how you behave, not how unsafe the area is.
Would recommend basketball or hockey, both superb.
Good recommendation re those open top bus tours. You think you are going to get scammed, but they are good value.
Would not recommend getting a town car from the airport either. They will try and scam you re the fair. Yellow Cabs are not exactly a smooth drive, but they are fairer with the fair.
Canal St in Chinatown is worth a look too if you pretend "designer" goods are your thing.
There was also a recent thread on here about eating in NYC. Some great tips on there about where to go, if you have not searched for it already.
I would also recommend a shop Century 21 which is near Ground Zero. Looks like a total jumble sale when you go in, but worth sniffing out some bargains, especially upstairs where the european designers are. Picked up some real bargains in there.
Best of all, enjoy it. It is a fantastic place and I would go back there time and time again.

Just to add to the list, Natural History Museum just off CP, doodle to get to on the subway (which is uber safe imo apart from the odd bible preacher type person). Also recommend St' Marks Place which is a student'y type place with some decent shops (grudge, metal, record etc) / places to eat.
