Default Save a FORTUNE on VET Medicine

I didn't realise, but, VETS are legally bound to give you a FREE Prescription!!

This can then be used to buy the medicine online ..... the savings are HUGE!!

When you look, you will discover that vets 'mark-up' medicines by a massive amount!!

Thats after they have just fleeced you £30 for a 3 minutes consulation!

Fight back ... demand a free precription!

From The Motley Fool:-

"1. Pets

If you have a pet, you'll no doubt know that feeling of dread at the vet's when you're presented with the bill. Now, I'm not going to suggest you take a crash course in veterinary medicine to save a few quid, but there's definitely some money to be saved on those extras. You know the kind of thing, worming tablets, flea treatment etc. Many people don't realise that this type of non-prescription medicine doesn't have to be purchased from your vet, and shopping around for those oft bought items can save you a fortune.

For instance, I recently ordered a six-month supply of Frontline for my cat. This would normally have cost around £25 from my vet, but by ordering from VetUK, I paid a mere £15.49 with free P&P - saving myself almost a tenner! Other sites offering a similar service include Pet Drugs Online and Best Pet Pharmacy and some sites will even allow you to order prescription medicines, as long as you provide a prescription signed by your vet"

VetUK, for healthy happy pets

Pet Drugs Online

Bestpet Pharmacy - online pet pharmacy buy Drontal, Fortekor, Metacam, Rimadyl, Vivitonin, Vetoryl and much more.

Thanks Pete - that's quite useful although I bet a vet is allowed to charge for writing out the scrip'. It fact our vet has issued us with a 6 month repeat prescription (max allowed as he has to see animal every 6 months) which we get Boots to make up as he said that would be cheaper option. But might well try one of the more reputable on-line places. Don't want to **** our vet off though as he is good to us and our pets. dl

It's not always necessary to have the vet write the script, especially for flea and worm prevention meds. The site I order from contact the vet directly to check it out.

It saves me quite a bit over t'year, as my Rotties are already 115lbs at one year old, so get through a fair bit of Hartguard and Frontline!

They ship internationally..........

They chose to go into that profession, and because they're in substantial debt, they try to rob us blind, to pay it off.

So, what you are saying is, "IF you have to study for longer than 3 years you are allowed to stitch the public up??" Is that right??

Vets do rip off the owners of pets - you know it, we know it, everyone knows it - anything that redresses the balance has to be a good thing!

I wouldn't say Vets ripped off the public. Supply and demand. Plus the vet has lower buying power and higher overheads than the online distributors. Simple business modelling really, Pete. I know you love to hold onto your money to make you even "richer", but the vet is entitled to charge what he thinks he can sell the product for in order to make a profit.

They are no different from any other business. The fact that an online store can sell more of the product cheaper, just means the vet will eventually have to either stop selling the product, raise his price to make more on the fewer sales, or lower his price to compete with the online store.

In the US, vets are very, very cheap compared to dentists and doctors!

DJ Vinyl Ritchie......... if 2000TLondon was a car, he'd be a SsangYong Rodius. Perfect for carting himself to the Doctor and Dentist, after uncle Pete has dealt with him accordingly.

cheers for that mate!!

I have just added a member to our family!!!

A friend of mine was walking her dog and this dog followed her home and wouldnt go away!!

She took it in and phoned the RSPCA who came to collect the dog but in the meantime my wife and I had seen her (which may have been a mistake)

They said that it will be up for claim (by the owners) for 7 days and if not it will go up for adoption but if its not adopted within a certain time it will be put to sleep!!!

Knowing this I had to have her!!

I dont know the mechanics of ow it happened but shes a Staffie/Doberman cross!!

I will be taking her to the vets next week to get her tuppence sorted and get her chipped (not remapped....cant expect more bhp or higher rev limit)

Lets see if I can put this to practise

Remember that there is no 'NHS' for Vets, they are all private. Veterinary Practices are expensive to run and the revenue they get from the sale of medicines will be accounted for. If they lose this revenue then they will have to increase consultation fees.

You're dead right ... the New Merc. and £800,000 house in the country don't run themselves!!

The point is - why should a VET charge £15 for some medicine when anyone can buy it on-line for £3?? The VET has paid £1 !!!!! I consider that mark-up a disgrace! ... a 'consultation fee' of £20 has already been charged for 5minutes work!!

I think the bottom line here is no-one wants to pay more for something when it can be obtained cheaper elsewhere, standard practice me thinks .
I agree that I don't want to pay £15 for something when I can get it for £6 on the net just by spending 5 minutes doing some research.
I appreciate people have to make a living somehow but paying double for an item is not on .

Cheer's for the info pslewis, will def. come in handy .

Well don't go to that vet then, pete, find another one, or practise the techniques yourself, not too complicated....

A little consistancy if you don't mind, Lewis, the vet sets his own price for the medicine, which YOU stated, therefore, finding a different vet, or becoming a vet yourself, may / will reduce the price of aforementioned medication. Surely you get a bulk discount on horse tranquilisers for when you're out on the pull, anyway?

Mmmm petmeds site ?? I tried to buy a load of stronger hold for my beast but they refused unless I faxed over the prescription from my vet.

All of these sites require prescriptions first on nearly all things.

I even looked at ordering this stuff from the US.

Lay off vets my local one is very hard up he had to sell his spanish holliday home as he could not afford that one and the home in the algarve as well.
All the other vets are laughing at him for having a 996 on the drive instead of a 997 and his range rover is two years old now as well. The shame of it.

Our vet has to economise with a newish looking WRX

But he's the one who is happy to give out a prescription for us to get meds elsewhere.

I think vet charges are great, in fact they're no way near high enough

If you think vets are ripping you off, perhaps you should have gone to vet school instead? Oh sorry, perhaps you're not clever enough?

It seems that the term "rip off" is applied to any profession/trade that you're not in. Plumbers apparently rip us off because they do a job we cant..... vets rip us off by doing a job we cant....the list goes on.

If you're jealous of someone elese money/income/job go and do something about it.

Its for my other half to choose between a Cayman S and a used 996 C4S.
