Default Are company mobile phones going to be taxable benefits again?

Just had an email at work saying if people continue to use the phones for personal use, then the inland revenue will start to apply the taxable benefit thing again, should they come and inspect us

I thought phones as a taxable benefit was done away with years ago

Are they now bringing it back, or is my company trying to pull a fast one ?

Personal calls must be paid for by the employee.

Otherwise the company is paying VAT on your personal calls which is a no no.

Maybe a ****ty business above a chip shop wouldn't, but I'd be suprised if a larger organisation is defrauding the Inland Revenue.

It would be a nightmare to administer surely!

Our company Mobiles are strictly work use only so that we don't have that issue but I would hate to have to scan 20+ Mobile Bills each month let alone work out what was private and business

Like rolls royce or wood group ? They have a fair usage policy on perosnal calls, so how does that work then ?

I think the problem comes from having one invoice for the whole account - that would be a nightmare to administer.

It would work if each individual account gets thier own invoice and claim it back through an expenses system minus their personal calls.

Davyboy - salarying staff for the half an hour to work that out would cost more than the calls. Absurd policies here all 'round!

OK, so don't make personal calls on your work phone - that will be the only option.

Or spend 10 mins a month marking your private calls.

There are other options that Network operators are working on to get around this problem, that enables individuals to "mark" their private numbers.

That's what O2 offer. Forget what it's called but it's a tool which splits out private and business calls and reconciles VAT and P11D entries automatically.

Large Co's enter into PSA's (Private settlement agreements) to apply an agreed blanket approach to issues like this, and thus avoid huge costs to get 100% accuracy.

Indeed - I pay a nominal £12 a month to cover any personal call I may make.

THis is what company does currently, and I thinnk they are getting fed up of doing it, so are threatening the old tax man routine so they dont have to scan bills,

BTW we are an outfit above a hair salon

only 40 employees and most have mobiles, I dont use mine, keeps it really simple that way

How does that work? Whilst I do call certain numbers often (eg office, colleagues), I'll often speak to new people, so who decides if the call is business or pleasure?

With my employer, I pay the monthly phone bill myself via direct debit then claim back through expenses everything except the personal calls. I have to send them the itemised bill with personal calls highlighted.

Sorry mate - no idea. I think the service is called 'Guardian'. There might be something on their website.

What worries me more is that your work PC and/or laptop is too be seen as taxable benefit too, and you'll pay tax on the value of it!

Labour have well and truely shafted this country
