P990i how did Sony Ericsson get it so wrong
I've been a Sony Ericsson P800/P900 user for about three years and I with many others shared the consensus that the unit was the defacto business phone... not a Blackberry but a phone.
I liked the P900 so much that I kept it whilst the rest of the world went 3G I've now got the P990 and I'm absolutely shocked how poor it is. This phone was delayed and delayed whilst they got it "right".
I would advise anyone considering this phone not to bother.... why?
1. The phone constantly crashes requiring you to remove the battery and restart it
2. Simple functions like turning on the speakerphone (whilst you are on hold) require going through five different menu items you then have to go through a similar process to turn it off
3. In general the phone is massively over engineered and far too complicated.
I'm completely gutted having waited so long for this phone.
So if you're thinking about purchasing one have a long close look at it before you make your decision.

Yep Im pretty unimpressed too. I loved my P800, but didnt see much point upgrading to a P900, and the 990 looks ****e.
Sticking to my Blackberry and C500 now - the only thing I really miss is the big touch screen of the P800.
P990 should have been so good as well, it could have been like a P900 but 1/2 as thick with more power.

Having had two P900s and a 910i I was really looking forward to the 990.
After waiting and waiting (year long delay) my 910 finally conked out before the 990 was available. I now have an HTC Hermes variant - fantastic. WM5 is not quite as slick as Symbian but it overall it is an excellent package that really does compete with ultralight PCs/PDAs/Phones.

All our P990s from work were swapped yesterday. We've now got Palm Treo 750's.
I've had it a day and:
1) It hasn't crashed
2) When people ring me, the name of the person comes up straight away
3) The email bit works
4) It hasn't run out of memory performing the simplest operation
5) It will actually connect to my PC/the network at work
If you're thinking of a P990. Don't bother!

Could not agree more. I had the P800, then the P900, then the P910 and waited patiently for the P990. I have the same problems as you are having plus more!!! Would not choose this phone again or recommend it to my worst enemy!!!

Goldman,
More or less in the same position as you. Have held onto my 900 for about 3 years now waiting for the 990 to appear and when it does.......oh dear.
I love Sony telephones as they have always been ahead of the pack. I go right back to the Z5 which I still use to this day. All my family use Sony phones.
Alas, I will not be moving to the 990. I have decided to go down the route of something more reliable like a Treo or HTC product. I can't afford for this kind of device to be unreliable when my whole working existence depends on it.
Real shame on the 990. Could be said that Sony have had their day and have been usurped by better products out there. Come to think about it the same could be said of Subaru.........

I've still got my trusty P910 (had p800 and p900)
Bought an orange spvm600 (imate jamin) and sold that pretty quick.
I've played with the p990, i don't mind it but it is a bit more fussy.
I know someone who was having crashing problems with theirs too. He done something like a software update and it's fine now. Also I noticed that it keeps processes running in the memory manager (like the spv) and you have to shut these down yourself (even if you exit the program correctly)

Download Swiss manager. It's makes the world of difference to the P990 as it helps manage the memory better. I've had very few problems with mine but I agree they messed up the memory side of things. They've not given it nearly enough.

Since they brought out the 990 I've barely slept a wink, I worry all day about stupid things, like where's my next appointment, what am I supposed to be having for dinner and what will happen if I only eat crisps?
How I envy the old days, when all people had to worry about was putting food on the table, when the next World War would be and spending 20 hours a day down t' mine!
