Default Bloody British Gas!!!

We had our annual maintenance visit / service from BG the other week, and they told me the boiler isn't safe and put an 'at risk' notice on it, warning 'In the interest of safety please DO NOT USE IT'.

They told me we'd need a new boiler, which p*ssed me off a bit tbh, as I could really do without using the Turbo / Injectors / ECU fund just to keep the wife and kids warm...

Anyway, BG quoted 5.5k for a new system. I had a couple of other quotes, the guy that does all our rental properties coming out best, as usual, at £3700. He started on Wednesday.

Bugger me, we get a letter through from BG yesterday saying that to correct the probs with our boiler we'd need a £30 ventilation mod, so apparently it isn't scrap at all.....

Not very pleased.

Anyway, Gary tells me the old boiler was using enough gas to power most of merseyside, and he reckins that the new boiler will be loads more efficient and cost a fraction to run- and I have to admit I've been getting rather peeved at the £100 DD to BG every month...

The moral of the story? Gritish Bas talk crap.

£3700 for a new boiler - what do you live in? A stately home or something?

£3700 would get you a full system including radiators
They are expensive, though just get a corgi registered guy to do it (best to find one thats recommended) as we had british gas replace our boiler....
day 1....
lost water pressure... water pisses all over the place
rings bg and says loosing water, they say 3 days, i laugh, say we have no water, ok sends someone round that evening.
5 days later, new boiler fitted....
still looses water pressure.....
14 days later, still loosing water, one of their top guys comes around and finds that pipe hasnt been sealed correctly, water starts seaping though ceiling!!!
problem then fixed, water pressure now good british gas contractors suck
need to now paint the ceiling when it dries out put complaint into british gas for damage done, nothing heard (1 month ago).

Your being ripped mate by at least £1200. Thats a hell of a big price! £2500 is about the right price for a boiler change and when you say it includes pump and other stuff,i presume hes changing the clyinder and upgrading to a Y plan system.

Condenser Boiler, Gravity Flow, Mains Flow. Size of house all a consideration.

£3500 is about the right sort of money for large boiler up to 120,00 BTU's and if a condenser boiler capable of around 15litres per minute.

If Gary is so clever why did he not notice what was needed to repair the boiler

3,700 is a huge amount. Have a look around at prices of boilers and you'll see. These blokes also get a trade price, the mark up must be massive.

Thanks for the comments guys, all very much appreciated, but tbh I really don't know how you can suggest I'm being ripped off with four separate quotes, the cheapest being £3700. Furthermore, do any of you know how big the installation is? No. To give you an idea, the house currently has its own boiler room.

The point of the thread was that a couple of weeks ago BG condemned it, and when I declined their kind offer of discount against their massive quote, they write to tell me a £30 fix will do the trick....
