Hi all
I will be looking for a Digital camera for Xmas.
I have an idea that 3million pixels are better than 2 - to give a good A4 image, say?
Also that a USB connection is paramount if time means anything - as a serial port connection will have me old before my time!
I like the idea of a RICOH - I have had Richo's in the past and they offer top quality at a price that doesnt include a 'mark-up' for the name.
I would like everyone to tell me what is their favourite digital camera, why and what they wish they had known before they bought?
I havent seen any GOLD ones - allthough I have searched and searched
All help gratefully received (play nicely!)
Pete
ps. can you manipulate a compressed image?? or does it need to be a bitmap??

Pete,
If your looking for something easy to use I'd recommend a Kodak. I have the DCC3400 here and its realy simple to use and does produce good results. Its 2.0 megapixels, which is still impressive, as I never use it at that anyway!!
The reason I chose this was because my dad has to use it and he isnt exactly a technological genius! Its incredibly easy.
As for images, you can edit any kind of image file with the right software, not just bitmaps.

Sony all the way m8
I have an old 2.1 Mpixel Cybershot DSC50. The best thing about it is you can move the LCD screen around like a camcorder. Only problem is it has no view finder only the LCD screen which is effected by light. Nice point and shoot model that has never failed me. Battery life around 200 mins.
I would recommend the DSC75 for people who know about taking pics and a P1 (i think thats the name) for point and shoot. Its very small. They all come with a very small 8MB memory card but contact this guy to get a 64MB stick for around £50. Software is adequate and you can take Mpegs.

Always check prices in your local area using a digi camera magazine then nip down Dixons, Commet, Currys etc and compare the prices. You will usually find them cheaper in the mags but the shops will match the price and beat it by 10%. I saved over £120 on a camcorder this way. Though took the 3rd shop to accept the price as it was over £100 difference.
Hope this helps.

Whats your budget.
For a good quality 3+ megapixel camera you are probably looking at anything from 500 - 1000 quid.
The Nikon coolpix 775 & 885 are quality products as are the latest Sony offerings. The S85 is a 4 megapixel and they have the F707 which has a 5 megapixel
It's all down to taste and requirements. I personally bought Sony because I own a sony Video camera so I can swap the memory sticks between the two.
Because a lot of the Sony stuff is propriatry(spelling) you tend to pay more for it.
What I did was go to a decent shop and get them to take a picture of you(some cameras struggle with skin tones) with all the cameras I had on my shortlist. I then got them to download onto the PC in the shop and then studied each in detail. Out of the three I looked at the Nikon was best with the Sony DSC-S75 a close second. I didnt thing the Nikon was that much better to warrant shelling out the extra cash for the accessories.
Good Luck

I, well, suzy, has a Fuji Finepix 40i (think it's been replaced by 50i now).
great little camera, usually have it set on 640 x ??? in normal mode, and does pretty good pics, goes up to 2400 x 1200 (I think) and these are hoooooge images and excellent quailty.
not a bad little toy, great for taking pics of the doggy and the scooby

What sort of price are we talking.. i'm a bit of a novice, and will use it for Family / car shot's. Not after anything fancy but nice quality.
Anybody give me anything I can look at (Links ??)
Cheers

Brilliant response - my budget would top out at about £800
Looked at a Ricoh today, superb slimline piece of kit, 4Mil Pixels, anyone any experience of Ricoh digitals? (I like to be different and dont follow the crowd (ala, Nikon, Cannon, Olympus etc. - Sony I will make an exception as my house is a shrine to all things Sony!)
PS - Should I sell my Nikon F50, with Sigma 28-200 SuperZoom SLR and replace it with a digital?

try www.dpreview.com for online reviews etc and test galleries with images taken using the majority of digital cameras.
I personally like the look of the Fuji Film FinePix 6900z and its got quite a useful 6x optical zoom - http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/comp...hod=sidebyside
