External magnetic field, it needs de-gaussing.

You can get a portable de-gausser, or call someone in.

Not sure what the technical explanation is - build up of electrons or something, but... my parents had this on their portable and I fixed it using a magnet from a hard drive! I just skimmed the magnet over it and the colour came back! Some sort of 'degaussing' effect I guess. Don't get too close though as it will **** it up even more.

I thought of trying this after I knackered my monitor at work with the same magnet while mucking around!

In the old days we degaussed our CAD monitors at work with magnetic rods - wiped them across the front of the screen ...... BUT at a distance!!

It lasted for ages before it came back again. I just repeated the procedure.

Just re-read your post.... on our TV it was concentrated in the corner, the rest of the screen was ok. Not sure how easy it would be if the whole screen has gone.

Mind you, I'd imagine the shops are pretty much giving away small CRT TV's these days, what with all these new fangled LCD ones!

All modern tv,s have an inbuilt degausing ring , its around the peripheral of the screen in the casing. Our Sony used to have a slight purple tinge in one corner, but within 1 minute it had gone, it only happened a couple of times, in the 3 odd years we had the tv.

a magnet will bend the electron beams, and can if not carefull f*ck it all up. if it aint too bad, leave well lone, if its that bad, you need a new tv

quite easy really

"Purple hint" across the whole screen is magenta colour because the green video drive/tube is playing up. If it clears up after a few minutes, then it might be the tube (green drive slow to warm up).

Give the tv a knock and watch the screen, if it flashes green or the picture improves or worsens then it most likely the tube green drive which has intermittent connections/component fault.

Faulty colours in the corners is generally down to the degauss circuit failing.
